Department of Manuscripts and Archives1959 AprilengspaThis print shows Fidel Castro at the cocktail reception held at the National Press Club on the day that he addressed an audience of over 600 who attended the luncheon held in his honor. Fidel Castro made the trip to Washington, D.C., in mid-April, 1959, in response to the invitation of Jules Dubois, editor of the Chicago Tribune and then president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Fidel remained in the United States for more than two weeks, eventually touring cities on the eastern seaboard such as Boston, Princeton, New Jersey and New York City.
