This manuscript is one of a series of essays written by Rousseau at the request of Madame Dupin in preparation for a book which she intended to write on women's rights.  The manuscripts are described in Anicet Sénéchal's "Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Secrétaire de Madame Dupin" (in Annales de la Société J.-J.
