- Abstract
-
"A couple flamboyantly dressed walk from left to right, followed by a footman who swaggers after them holding an umbrella resting against his shoulder, its ferrule end terminating in a small weather-vane. The man holds a quizzing-glass to his eye and a tasselled cane; the lady (left) holds a large fan, her left arm thrust through his right. He wears a large cocked hat, a bulky neck-cloth with floating ends, and loosely fitting half-boots. She wears a hat tied under her chin with vandyked trimmings and an enormous feather. A train trails on the ground. The servant wears a round hat with looped brim and cockade, enormous epaulettes, and a neck-cloth like his master's. The treatment is decorative, with no background."--British Museum online catalogue
