The letter describes Blackmore's impressions of the Apostle Island region of Lake Superior and gives an account of his recent experiences in the Middle West, including travel by train as a guest of stockholders and directors of iron mines visiting mines in the Lake Superior region; impressions of Chicago and news received there regarding the Hayden Expedition; and a visit to a lumber mill on Lake Michigan.
