Ginling College shared the campus of West China Union University during the period when its home campus was occupied by the Japanese during the Sino-Japanese war. On a country journey in West China a Ginling student slakes her thirst by a drink from a piece of sugar cane. Her bedding roll is at her feet, and her charcoal hand-warmer is strapped to the wheel guard. A young woman is seated on a rickshaw with a large stalk of sugar cane in her hands. A man is bending down, about to pick up the poles so he can driver her.
