The buyers and connoisseurs sit on the outer side of a line of trestle-tables arranged in the arc of a circle. Others stand behind them. In the centre sits the auctioneer Hutchins, stout and smiling, his hammer raised. The clerk (Judd) sits facing him in shadow, writing at a small table lit by two candles. Two attendants stand on the inner side of the trestles showing the lots. One (left) shows a large volume to a group of five, the centre figure being the spectacled Dr. Lort. On the walls of the room are framed pictures, including one of a reclining Venus. On the high chimney-piece are statuettes.
