Description
Title devised by cataloger. A lock of Madame de Maintenon's hair, medium brown hair secured to paper backing with small paper label. Kept in the Glass Closet at Strawberry Hill with letters from Madame de Maintenon. Below label securing the lock, written in Horace Walpole's hand: "Cheveux de Made. de Maintenon". Further note also mounted on same paper also in Walpole's hand "Written by Madame de Maintenon & given to me at St. Cyr by one of the Nuns. Hor Walpole." Text from the 1842 Catalogue of the classic contents of Strawberry Hill collected by Horace Walpole: Two original letters of Madame de Maintenon, also a lock of her hair.
