Abstract: Two prints depicting the visit of Biddle and his two ships to Japan. The print of the Columbus and Vincennes in Japan depicts the two American ships surrounded by small Japanese boats, with Japanese crewmen from two boats boarding the American ships. The second print, the Departure, depicts the American ships being towed out to sea by the Japanese boats.
Description: Commodore James Biddle visited Japan in 1846 to ask for the opening of commercial relations, which was refused.
