An enormously fat cook sits by a kitchen fire, toasting-fork in hand, caressing a young man, whom she has provided with the slice of bread placed under roasting meat known as a sop in the pan. He eats the delicacy, but looks warily at the cook. A large joint of beef turns on a spit before a fierce fire (right) on which a pot is boiling. The arrangement of the dresser (left) is characteristic of the period, and long survived (or survives): dishes above, plates below; a grater and sauce-boats hang from nails, pots are piled on the pot-board under the dresser-drawers.
