The two letters are dated April 5, 1875, and February 14, 1876, and were written when Lugenbeel was a Lieutenant Colonel with the 1st Infantry.</dc:description><dc:description>Born in Maryland; career U.S. Army soldier who served in the Mexican and Civil Wars and on the Western frontier; retired as a colonel in 1882, and died in 1886.</dc:description><dc:description>Gift of Charles and Lindley Eberstadt, 1971.</dc:description><dc:format>text</dc:format></oai_dc:dc>
