- Abstract
-
After March 13, 1872, many of the letters are addressed to his successor, T. D. Odeneal
Alfred B. Meacham's correspondence deals with the routine work of the superintendent of Indian affairs, government policy and administration, the Indian wars, and his own removal from office. The chief correspondents are the Commissioners of Indian Affairs in Washington and the Oregon Indian agents. Letters from these officials after March 13, 1872, are addressed to Meacham's successor, T. B. Odeneal. The 1873 correspondence concerns Meacham's work as chairman of a peace commission to the Modocs.
