Holograph diary, dating from October 16, 1842 to December 3, 1843, in which Trueheart describes his experiences as a prisoner of Mexico after his capture in San Antonio by General Woll. The diary documents his march with other prisoners from Monclova to Perote, Mexico, and his imprisonment at the "Perote Castle." Trueheart describes his daily activities during the march and in prison, lists names of other prisoners held at the castle, and comments on news received regarding the continuing conflict between Texas and Mexico. Laid in is a sheet containing a list of one day's rations for fifty-nine men, signed James L. Trueheart and dated August 17, 1843; a photocopy of James L. Trueheart's one-page oath of identity dated May 28, 1874; and a one-page photocopy of part of a legal document regarding a claim against the Republic of Texas dated July 21, 1851.
