O'Sullivan served as photographer to Clarence King's Exploration of the 40th Parallel (1867-1869, 1872), and to George Wheeler's Expeditions & Surveys West of the 100th Meridian (1871, 1873). Most of these photographs can be matched to those taken for these surveys.
