Shows Sackett's Hotel in Sacramento, with signs for Barr Griggs & Coursen, State Treasurer, Merchants Exchange, W.M. Hares & Co., and other storefronts. "It was known as Sackett's Hotel, 1854-55, and in 1856 as the John Gardner House, with lodgings on the second floor, as well as those of State Treasurer, State Controller and U.S. Customs. Stores and the Merchants' Exchange Saloon occupied the street floor." Carroll Douglas Hall, Old Sacramento; a report on its significance to the city, State, and Nation, with recommendations for the preservation and use of its principal historical structures and sites (Sacramento: California Division of Beaches and Parks, 1958), 21.
