Print depicts a scene of fighting between a unit of theUnited States Army 1st Cavalry regiment under command of then Lieutenant Colonel George R. Crook and Northern Paiute warriors led by Chief Howluck along the Owyhee River, a tributary of the Snake River, on December 26, 1866 at the battle of Owyhee River; the infantry are shown in a line on lower ground firing up at the Native Americans, who are in defensive positions among rocks on higher ground
