Nelson Slater material includes certificates, a diploma, and letters regarding his education, ministry and teaching in New York, Ohio, and Illinois (1831-1848); a copy of the certificate of copyright issued at the California U. S. District Court, Northern District, on 1852 Jan 16, for The Traveler's Guide... by Slater and P. L. Platt; an account book dating from 1859 to 1866, containing Slater's personal financial records, "Items from B[enjamin] F[ranklin] Slater's letters," "Dry Creek School District" accounts, and Slater family genealogical information; Slater's diary for 1876 containing brief daily entries regarding weather, activities (including attending lectures, camping in Yosemite, writing letters), expenditures, and a Bible verse citation; a printed item, "The Confession of Faith and Covenant of the Presbyterian Congregational Church of Champlain" (Plattsburgh: Printed by F. P. Allen, 1832), which includes a list of church members
The Henrietta Slater McIntire materials include her Normal School diploma; a certificate of partnership for her husband's employer Booth and Company in Sacramento, dated 1874 Jul 8; a typed carbon biography of Edward B. McIntire and other individuals involved in the investigation of "blind veins" of gold in Amador County, California, written and signed by John A. McIntire and dated 1924 May 8; a printed children's book, New and True Stories for Children (New York: Samuel Raynor, 1856) inscribed to Henrietta by her father on her birthday, 1856 Oct 11; a typed carbon obituary of Henrietta McIntire; and four cabinet photographs of John A. and Henrietta McIntire and other Slater and McIntire family members, and a whole plate tintype (22 x 17 cm.) of a group of young women, possibly Henrietta's classmates
An ALS dated 1871 Apr 12, from Nelson Slater to his daughter Adeline, regarding a concordance of the Bible, and an ALS dated 1820 May 29 to July Ann Kitchel in New York State, from her parents Joseph and Nancy Kitchel are also included in the papers

Nelson Slater was born in Champlain, New York, in 1805. After graduating from Union College (1831) and Auburn Theologial Seminary (1834), he was a Presbyterian minister in Morris County New Jersey, a school administrator in Painesville, Ohio (1835) and Illinois (1841), and the head of a seminary in Mississippi (1850). He moved with his wife Emily and children to California in 1851, and settled in Sacramento where he was a minister and school administrator. With P. L. Platt he wrote The Traveler's Guide Across the Plains, Upon the Overland Route to California (Chicago: Printed at the Daily Journal Office, 1852). He died in Sacramento in 1886.
Henrietta Slater McIntire (daughter of Nelson and Emily Slater) was born shortly after her parents arrived in California in 1851. She graduated from the State Normal School in San Francisco in 1868, and the San Francisco high school in 1872. She was a teacher until she married John A. McIntire of the Sacramento grocery firm of Booth and Company. She died in Sacramento in 1923.
