BEIN PLAYING CARDS GEN 1667: From the Cary Collection of Playing Cards.
Title devised by cataloger.
Date of publication from Keller.
Suit system: Latin.
Deck of single-figure playing cards with suit signs and without indices, derived from Portuguese dragon cards. Aces ("assa") depict wingless dragons; kings ("rai") are seated; cavaliers ("jarang") are on horseback; and jacks ("sota") are female. Clubs ("aju") have a blue blade, swords ("sapada") have a red blade; coins ("ulaweng") have a red circle quartered by gold, with a dot in each quarter; and cups ("kopasa") have a halved circle in red and black, with three feathers or leaves at the top. Pip cards of swords and batons are arranged like pins in a pin cushion; the 2 of these suits depict double-headed sea monster-like creatures; 7 of clubs has red lower border with three gold crosses. Vines decorate the cards of coins and cups; a fish creature appears on the 7 of these suits. Hand-painted on pasteboard, with red paper used on the back of the card wrapped toward the front, creating a border of red. Each card measures approximately 68 x 40 mm.
