The letters were part of the ms. collection bequeathed by Madame du Deffand to Horace Walpole. Sold at the Strawberry Hill Sale, 1842, to Dyce-Sombre whose nephew, W.R. Parker-Jervis sold them in 1920. Acquired by Wilmarth Sheldon Lewis in 1932.

Provenance: Sold at Strawberry Hill Sale, day vi, lot 107, to D.O. Dyce Sombre, Esq., £157.10.0; bequeathed by his widow to her nephew, W.R. Parker-Jervis; Sotheby's, 12 March 1920 (Parker-Jervis Sale): distributed, but the letters from Mme. du Deffand were bought by Paget Toynbee and given to the Bodleian, and those from Voltaire are now at the Bibliotheque National. The chief pieces now at The Lewis Walpole Library are Mme. du Deffand's Journal for 1779-80, quarto; her Recueil de divers ouvrages ['Portraits'], quarto; and two folios, Oeuvres de Mr. le chevalier de Boufflers and Recueil de lettres choisies de differentes personnes. A folio bound in calf for Mme. du Deffand, containing copies of letters from Voltaire and replies to them, was sold in Paris, 29 May 1968, to Beres, 19,000 francs; numerous notes by Horace Walpole. He inscribed each of these volumes.
