Portions of the drawing were done on smaller pieces of paper integrated into the larger sheet; the image of the clock is drawn on a sheet 65 x 27 mm that is pasted onto the larger sheet at the center of the composition, while the image of the top of the structure is drawn on a sheet 72 x 32 mm that is pasted into an area at the top of the composition where the larger sheet has been cut away.
Laid down on an ink line mount.
Mounted on page 65 in a volume of ca. 50 drawings that was assembled from works purchased by Horace Walpole at the Vertue sale of 1757. Now bound in red morocco, this volume has Walpole's manuscript title-page: Original drawings of heads, antiquities, monuments, views, &c. by George Vertue and others.
Provenance: Sold at Strawberry Hill Sale, day viii, lot 32, to Smith [London, 1268]. Lord Waldegrave, July 1948, to W.S. Lewis, in a collection.
