Printmaker identified as James Gillray in the British Museum online catalogue.
"This is the last of three Gillray/ Wilkinson prints of disasters at sea, in this case of 'Halsewell' on its way to India that sunk off the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, in Jan. 1786. Northcote was commissioned by Wilkinson to provide a design for Gillray, but the latter did not sign the print (perhaps, as Tim Clayton suggested, to register his displeasure at not having been asked to provide the design). The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1786, a year before this print was published, see T.
