The collection includes music manuscripts which consists of submitted compositions, fragments, and transcriptions that were all owned by Dizzy Gillespie. Also included are works of art completed by Dizzy’s wife, Lorraine Gillespie. The artwork includes portraits which are both original drawings and photocopies. Also included are sheet music for instruments including piano, saxophone, bass, trombone, and trumpet. The sheet music consists both of photocopies and manuscript sheet music. The sheet music is arranged in alphabetical order by title. Some of the sheet music is annotated. Also included are printed music and performance ephemera. Box 1 contains Lorraine Gillespie's artwork, submitted music compositions, and ephemera. Boxes 2 and 3 include musical scores

John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie was born on October 21, 1917 in Cheraw, South Carolina. Gillespie taught himself how to play trumpet and trombone and went on to perform in big bands and establish his own band. He also was a composer, bandleader, and a figure in the bebop movement.
