- Abstract
-
A sketchbook with ninety-six leaves of wove paper containing thirty drawings documenting some of the places visited by Gustave de Beaumont and Alexis de Tocqueville during their 1831-1832 tour of the United States and Canada. The views are dated but not signed, and appear in chronological order beginning in Newport, Rhode Island (May 10, 1831) and ending in Mobile, Alabama (January 4, 1832). Images include the Newport and New York harbors; scenes on Oneida Lake, Lake Superior, and Lake Huron; three views of Niagara Falls; Montmorency Falls, the Montcalm and Wolfe monument, and Québec City in Québec; Stockbridge, Massachusetts; Burlington Bar and other points on the Ohio River; and Mobile Bay. The prisons portrayed are Eastern State Penitentiary (Cherry Hill) in Philadelphia and Auburn Prison in New York State. On November 24, 1831, Beaumont drew a group of Choctaw Indians departing for Arkansas. The images are mostly line drawings in ink over graphite; some have wash and watercolor added
The volume opens with an autograph manuscript title page and two finished watercolors preceding the views: a dead bird laying on a portfolio, and a still life with a pair of Indian moccasins, a peace pipe, a beaded scabbard, and a knife. There are two images at the back of the book: undated graphite sketches of herdsmen with livestock (sheep or goats and cattle) and a ship nearing land
- Description
-
Gustave de Beaumont (1802-1866), French author and prison reformer, made a nine-month-long tour of the United States with his colleague Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) between May 9, 1831, and February 20, 1832. The pair traveled by steamboat, horse, and stage coach through seventeen states with the purpose of observing the American prison system in preparation for a report on the subject; they also visited several towns and sites in Québec, Canada.
