Initial strokes on each line in red. Large historiated romanesque initial of red, green, and yellow on f. 1r. Similar initial on f. 12r. Smaller initials in red, green, and gold on ff. 23v, 35v, 48v, 81r, and 98r. Three-line initial at the head of item 1. Many marginal and interlinear notes of the 12th-15th centuries.
Manuscript on parchment. Several quires are missing between VII and VIII. Late Italian carolingian miniscule by several scribes (ff. 1r-54r, scribe 1; ff. 54r-56v, scribe 2; ff. 57r-63r scribe 3; ff. 65r-87v, scribe 4). Several sections were erased and re-written as late as the thirteenth century. Ff. 63v-64v contain an unusual transition hand. Many words retraced.
Previously in the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 9805). Phillipps acquired it from the book dealer Thomas Thorpe (Cat., pt. 2 , no. 800). A note on the first flyleaf at the end, perhaps by Thorpe, states that the manuscript was bought in Italy. Purchased from H.P. Kraus in 1987.
