- Description:
- Claude Cahun, born Lucy Schwob, was a French photographer, artist, and author. Cahun was associated with the Surrealist movement, and her photography and writings addressed issues of gender identity. In 1937 she moved to Jersey in the Channel Islands with her partner Suzanne Malherbe, an illustrator who adopted the name Marcel Moore. Cahun and Malherbe were active in the resistance during the German occupation of Jersey during World War II. They were imprisoned and sentenced to death in 1944, but were liberated at the end of the war. and Formerly owned by Basil Bigg. Purchased from Bernard Quaritch, Ltd., on the Edwin J. Beinecke Book Fund, 2009.

- Notebook or diary containing pen-and-ink sketches and autograph manuscript captions and text documenting the activities and interests of a young, New Haven, Connecticut-area woman over a five month period from September 1893 into January 1894. Sketches and captions depict and refer to objects, friends, school, and social activities. Activities include meetings with others, meals, church, drawing, dancing, shopping for gifts, the gym, the circus, Yale University events, and specific games, such as charades, chess, cards, parchisi, hide-and-seek, and paper dolls. Includes loose material and material pasted in: one autograph letter, signed, addressed to Hastings at a New Haven address, additional sketches, one clipping, printed ephemera, and manuscript notes.

- Autograph manuscript notebook documenting Arnold's tour of France, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland from March through August of 1859. Arnold traveled as Foreign Assistant Commissioner to the Newcastle Commission on Elementary Education, and many of the entries record official meetings connected with the commission's business, as well as Arnold's own observations on Continental educational systems, particularly those of France. In addition, Arnold notes his meetings with French authors and critics, including Sainte-Beuve, Villemain, Guizot, Mérimée, and Montalembert. Later entries consist almost entirely of quotations from Arnold's reading, particularly of French authors.

The collection features approximately 172 pieces of correspondence from Edith Wharton, consisting of autograph letters, notes, and postcards, signed, dating from 1909 to 1931, as well as sixteen pieces of correspondence from Bélugou to Wharton. Selected letters between Wharton and Bélugou were assembled by Claudine Lesage and published as Lettres à l'ami français (Paris: M. Houdiard, [2001]). - Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of notes concerning the French nobility. The manuscript begins with genealogical histories of various French noble houses, including those of Lorraine; Savoy; Languedoc; Luxembourg; and Orleans. Other entries in the manuscript include an account of the French royal family; a list of the French nobility; and copies of letters of 1602 from Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, duc de Bouillon to King Henri IV and from the King to the authorities of the Dauphine about Bouillon. The collection also contains a number of entries in English, including a travel diary recording a journey from Blois to La Rochelle and an essay in English about the Swiss alliance with France. Dos-a-dos appears a list of Biblical kings.
