"A large sheet ... on one side of which are printed 40 wood-engraved portraits of the characters from The Pickwick papers. At the foot of each picture are four lines of humorous verse. Buyers of this one-penny sheet obviously were able to cut it apart and assemble a deck of 40 prints of playing-card size"--Podeschi.
