"A fat old woman leans back in an armchair, her left leg thrust forward. She pulls up her petticoat to display the bare leg, on which is a running sore, to an aged doctor (right), who bends over it, holding his spectacles to his eyes. Her desperate plight is apparent in the fixed stare with which she looks up and to the right. By her side (left) is a bottle and glass. A pretty young courtesan, resting her left arm on the back of the chair, leans forward to hold a candle above the leg."--British Museum online catalogue, description of reissued state

"A naked, bald, and grotesquely obese man stands on the tips of his toes about to plunge, or rather topple, into a bath, in which he admires, Narcissus-like, his own absurd reflection. He is poised on a platform projecting over the bath; behind him stands a comely young woman, watching in astonishment. A flesh-brush is beside her, another is on a seat on the opposite side of the bath, where a print of Narcissus is on the wall. An ugly old woman's head looks through a small rectangular aperture up m the wail; she is much amused at the scene. On the wall is a placard: 'Glowcocks Bagnio Cold and Hot Baths Cupping Sweating and otherwise cleansing the body performed here Lodgings for Gentlemen.'"--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:
"A fat elderly woman walks (left to right) over rough cobbles, in the teeth of a strong wind against a deluge of rain; her contour is global and fills the greater part of the design. She holds a lighted lantern and clutches a bottle of cordial and a bundle. She wears a hooded cloak, a flat straw hat over a white cap, and pattens. Near her (right) runs a shivering little chimney-sweep, bare-legged, and carrying his tools and soot-bag; he is shouting or 'crying the streets' for custom. Behind her (left) is an aged watchman, leaning with folded arms on the front of his watch-box, asleep. His lighted lantern hangs above his head."--British Museum online catalogue, description of an earlier state

"The Prince of Wales, languid with repletion, leans back in an arm-chair, holding a fork to his mouth. His waistcoat is held together by a single button across his distended stomach. On his right a circular table covered with the remains of a meal, with decanters of 'Port' and 'Brandy', a castor of 'Chian'. Under the table, partly covered by the cloth, are empty wine-bottles. Behind the chair (right) a brimming chamber-pot stands on a table or commode on which are long bills: 'Poulterers Bill . . . unpaid, Butcher's Bill . . . unpaid, Baker's Bill . . . unpaid', and (on the ground) 'Doctors Bill'. In the foreground (right) lie a dice-box and dice with three books: 'Debts of Honor Unpaid', 'Newmarket List', and 'Faro Partnership Account Self Archer Hobart & Co.' On a shelf behind the Prince (right) is a triple stand of jelly-glasses, among which is a small pot: 'For the Piles', and a bottle: 'Drops for a Stinking Breath'. Beside it are a box of 'Leakes Pills', and a bottle of 'Velnos Vegetable Syrup' (see BMSat 7592). On the wall above is a candle-sconce with a burlesque coat of arms for the Prince: a plate with a crossed knife and fork, with his motto, coronet, and feathers; one candle is stuck in a wine-bottle, the other in a wine-glass. Above the Prince's head is a round picture in an elaborate frame inscribed 'L. Comoro, Ætat. 199 [sic]': a half length portrait of a man with a long beard drinking from a glass inscribed 'Aqua'. (Luigi Cornaro of Padua, 1467-1566, published 'Discorri della vita sobria . . .', a treatise on the means of living to extreme old age, describing the ascetic diet by which he had recovered health and vitality when in danger of death at the age of forty. Portrait by Tintoretto, Pitti Palace.) A carpet covers the floor. Through the window is seen the (unfinished) colonnade of Carlton House."--British Museum online catalogue
