"A bogus wizard stands raising his wand while a grotesque figure, in answer, snorting fire, emerges in clouds of smoke from a rectangular aperture in the floor (left), dagger in one hand, cup of 'poison' in the other. The dupe, an ugly man in old-fashioned dress, watches terror-struck, while a woman picks his pocket from behind a curtain. A magic circle, with toad, skull, &c, a cat, a book with cabalistic signs, a stuffed crocodile suspended from the ceiling, give the required atmosphere."--British Museum online catalogue

"An obese, elderly man, completely bald, sits in an arm-chair while a shopman pours oil from a bottle (straw-covered like a Chianti flask) on to his scalp, pressing down his head with the left hand. At his feet is a basin to receive the overflow. On the ground is a tall 'Fools Cap', with ears. Behind them stands a woman with a shock of red hair standing on end; she looks in horror at its reflection in a wall-mirror (right). On the wall above her head is a placard: 'Wonderful Discovery Carrotty or Grey Whiskers Changed to Black Brown or Blue--' High on the wall are shelves where bottles of the oil are closely ranged, one inscribed 'Wig Oil One Guinea Pr Bottle'. Behind the shopman (left) stands a big Ali Baba jar. Across the wall is a large placard inscribed: 'Macassar Oil, for the Growth of Hair is the finest invention ever known for encreasing hair on bald Places, Its virtues are pre-eminent for improving and beautifying the Hair of Ladies and Gentlemen--This invaluable Oil recommended on the basis of truth and experience is sold at One Guinea Pr Bottle by all the Perfumers and Medicine Venders in the Kingdom'."--British Museum online catalogue

"An aged and moribund woman (three-quarter length) sits in an arm-chair directed to the left. A doctor, stout, middle-aged, and sensual, holds her wrist, while putting his arm round a buxom young woman who leans on the back of the chair. They gaze into each other's eyes. On the table at the old woman's elbow are medicine phials, a bowl of 'Composing Draught', and a pill-box inscribed 'Opium'. "A quack doctor (right) stands outside his house surrounded by a pyramid of bottles inscribed 'Velnos Syrup', one of which he holds up, demonstrating its virtues with a complacent smile to a band of rival practitioners (left) who are furiously threatening his barricade. Behind his head is inscribed : 'List of Cures \ In 1788,5,000 \ In 1789, 10,000'. The house is at the corner of 'Frith Street'; it has a porch inscribed in large letters 'Mr Swainson N. 21'. A surgeon threatens Swainson with a knife, raising also a leg to kick. A second surgeon kneels on one knee, also holding a knife and glaring ferociously; beside him is a basket of surgeon's instruments. Behind him is a man who directs an enormous syringe at the self-satisfied Swainson. An old man wearing spectacles holds up a 'Pill Box'. These assailants are dominated by a very stout man in the rear who holds up a pestle in one hand, in the other a mortar inscribed 'Mercury the only Specific'. Medicine bottles are ranged on the chimney-piece, a kettle stands on the fire, a high trivet with a dish is by the fender.
