Abstract:
A zoological encyclopedia listing the names of the different animals, birds and insects arranged alphabetically, with anecdotes, poems and folkloric tales, but the most important part of this work is the description of the medicinal properties of the animals and their different organs. It is the most comprehensive zoological work in Arabic and a store-house of folk-lore and popular medicine. He worked as a tailor, but then devoted himself to learning and scholarship and became a prominent scholar at al-Azʹhar. He also lived for a while in Mecca and Medina. al-Damīrī finished writing his book in the month of Rajab, 773 H (January/February, 1372). The book is in two versions: long and short. The present manuscript is the long version and according to a recent note on leaf 1a it was copied from a manuscript copied in 805 H (1402/1403). Two treatises by Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ghazzālī (1058-1111), one of the most prolific and authoritative Muslim scholars from Ṭus (Iran): 1. The last part of Iḥyāʼ ʻulūm al-dīn (Kitāb al-nīyah wa-al-ikhlāṣ wa-al-ṣidq, wa-huwa al-kitāb al-sābiʻ min rubʻ al-munjiyāt to the end of the work), (folios: 2a-109a). The first leaf is missing. The work is a famous treatise on Islamic doctrines, sufism and Islamic religious life. Copied on Monday 21 Shawwāl 850 (9 January, 1447) by Muḥammad ibn al-Imām Abī Bakr ibn al-Ḥarīrī al-Shāfiʻī and collated with several copies on 11 Dhū al-Qaʻdah, 850 (28 January, 1447). 2. Mihhāj al-ʻābidīn (folios: 110a-171b), also called "Minhāj al-ʻābidīn ilá jannat Rabb al-ʻĀlamīn," a treatise on Islamic religious life and sufism, considered to be al-Ghazzālī's last work. The treatise seems to be copied by the same scribe, probably also in 1447. Place of copying not mentioned.
