Gift of Mrs. Richard Gimbel, 1971., Cataloged from microfilm by Albert Derolez., Manuscript on parchment containing 1) List of Epistle and Gospel readings (incipit and explicit) for the liturgical year. 2) Survey of the subdivisions of the Bible. 3) Bible text. 4) Interpretationes nominum Hebraicorum. Thin parchment, many leaves and the lower outer corners of all leaves damaged by moist. Two folios are missing between ff. 184 and 185, two folios between ff. 282 and 283, one folio between ff. 295 and 296, all with loss of text. There is no good explanation for the complicated quire structure of this manuscript, except that art. 4 is a separate codicological unit. The first quire, made from goatskin and containing articles 1-2, is a 14th-century addition and the handwriting looks Italian. The rare marginal notes appear most in the first quires, are written in Italian Gothica Cursiva and seem generally to be of a grammatical nature. The manuscript, copied in France in the beginning of the fourteenth century, was consequently later in Italy. Written in very small Northern Gothica Textualis., Red headings and red heigthening of the majuscules. Alternately red and blue pain initials (1 line) in art. 4. Alternately red and blue flourished initials (2 lines) with long marginal extensions. Beautiful larger flourished initials in the same colours with very developed penwork, in which both colours are sometimes combined, at the beginning of the various books and sections. On f. 1r large littera duplex and on f. 8r (beginning of Genesis) large initial I with very fine penwork, both the full height of the text area and in the same colours. f. 1r-v Antiphona. Cruci, corone spinee, clavisque dire, lancee ... per que corone gaudia perpetua speramus. Versus. Adoramus te Christe ... Oremus. Quesumus omnipotens Deus, ut qui sacratissima nostre redemptionis insignia temporaliter veneramur, per hec indesinenter muniti eternitatis gloriam consequamur. Per. De sancto Eustachio antiphona., On parchment., This small luxurious book of devotion seems to be organized according to the liturgical year, the Exaltation of the Cross being celebrated on 14 September, the martyr Eustace on 20 September., and Yellow heightening of the majuscules. One 2-line flourished initial, gold with blue flourishes, and on f. 1r one square miniature (5 lines) in a golden frame representing the Instruments of the Passion, accompanied by a full rinceaux border with a gold and pink bar in the inner margin. In the upper right and the two lower corners flowers and plants grow on a circular grassy patch of earth. The spiralling tendrils between them carry gold balls and vine leaves and flowers.

The decoration consists of 1- or 2-line initials in paint and liquid gold and a three-margin-outer border on f. 1r. On the same page two rectangular pictures (10 lines high, framed in gold and black ink placed in the text area, representing (1) St. Anthony holding a book and (2) St. Claude as a bishop, blessing.

Manuscript on parchment (thick), composed of two distinct parts, of 1) Calendar-obituary giving the names of nuns, lay sisters, and benefactors of the Benedictine abbey of Notre-Dame de Saintes in Charente Inferieure in Southwestern France. The main body of this section dates from the fourteenth century, but was still being supplemented in the sixteenth century. 2) A version of the Usuard Martyrology; the body of the text written in the 12th century. 3) Rule of St. Benedict, feminine version.
Description:
Binding: Fifteenth century (?), France. An early resewing on three double, twisted, tawed skin supports laced into wide grooves in oak boards and pegged with rectangular or square pegs. Covered in brown sheepskin with corner tongues, blind-tooled with diagonals in an outer frame. Spine leather wanting. Leather on boards much worn., ff. 3, 46 excised., First part of the manuscript has been extensively patched and repaired., Part I: Initials, dates and headings in red. Part II: Two decorated initials, ff. 47r and 129r, 6-line, in red, green and blue. Decorative headings in brown ink touched with red and green, or red touched with blue. Small initials, 4- to 1-line in red, some with foliage scrolls in red or contrasting color. Headings in red., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-46): Written in a variety of scripts ranging from gothic bookhand to batarde. Part II (ff. 47-168): Written in elegant late caroline/early gothic bookhand.

Bound in the same bindery for the Guarnieri-Balleani family (Iesi) as MS 450 and Marston MSS 72, 181, 182, and 212., Contemporary accounts on f. 49v refer to one Jordanus de Walchelina, and to Rotbertus, Liulfus and Leofric. Partially effaced inscription on f. 49v indicates that Stefano Guarnieri (d. 1495) bought the manuscript in Rome in 1465 (see U.
