"The Colossus, emblem of French revolutionary bloodshed and aggression (and perhaps intended for Bonaparte), strides from Egypt (right), where the left foot rests on Pyramids, to 'France', where the right foot tramples on the 'Holy Bible' and a cross. Beneath the Bible lie the dismantled scales of justice. Above, an arm and the shield of Britannia emerge from dark clouds; in the hand is a sheaf of thunderbolts which smites the Colossus, striking off its head, a skull in which serpents twine; from this drops a bonnet-rouge in the form of a fool's cap. The arms and legs of the Colossus have also been broken, so that the figure is on the point of collapse. The severed right hand rests on a guillotine, inscribed 'Fraternité'. The decollated head of Louis XVI [see BMSat 8297, &c] hangs by the hair from the figure's neck. From the left hand drops an open book: 'Religion de la Nature [cf. BMSats 8350, 9240] Injustice Oppression Murder Destruction'. The figure wears only a tricolour sash and belt in which are a pistol and a bloody dagger. Its hands and feet are dyed with blood above the wrists and ankles. "Napoleon sits on the shoulder of Talleyrand gleefully peering through a large rolled document at the Channel, where the French flotilla is being destroyed by shells from British ships. Talleyrand stands behind the gun embrasures of a fortress on a cliff at whose base the gunboats are foundering. He wears a general's uniform with a long cloak; the crown of his cocked hat is a bishop's mitre. He holds Bonaparte's legs, grinning delightedly. "Lady Salisbury stands on a mound holding up a fox's brush. She has outstripped the hounds who rush towards her, the foremost just about to reach her. She turns her head in profile to the left; her long dark hair streams down her back; she wears a hunting-cap resembling the helmet of a light horseman, the skirt of her habit and an under-petticoat are in tatters, the lower part torn away, showing laced half-boots and torn stockings. A rider sits stiffly on a misshapen horse that wears blinkers. The rider's stirrups almost touch the ground, and his body and legs form a quasi-vertical line from head to heels. Above his hat is a dotted half circle labeled '90 degrees'. On the right in the middle distance another horse gallops out of control of its rider while further on top a hill in the distance is St. Paul's Cathedral and surrounding buildings.

One of many satires on the morganatic marriage of George IV and Mrs. Fitzherbert. on the left Mrs. Fitzherbert as Dido sits on a funeral pyre made up of phallic-shaped logs and watches the Prince of Wales sail away in a small boat whose flag is inscribed with the word 'Windsor' [Castle]. The wind which fills the ragged sail of the boat appears to be produced by a blast from the mouths of Dundas and Pitt, whose profile heads are on the extreme left. It is directed at Dido's head, and has blown off a royal crown, an orb and sceptre, and a coronet decorated with the Prince of Wales's feathers. With a tragic gesture she holds out in her right hand a mutilated crucifix. Her breast is bare and her girdle of 'Chastity' is broken. At her feet lie emblems of Popery: a sharp-toothed harrow inscribed 'For the conversion of Heretics', shackles, a pair of birch-rods, an axe, a scourge, and a rosary and crucifix. The pyre seems to be made of money-bags. The boat is the 'Honor'; the Prince is seated between Fox, who holds the tiller, and Burke, who holds the sail; his arms are folded and he looks over his shoulder at Fox, saying, "I never saw her in my Life". Fox echoes "No, never in all his Life, Damme"; Burke, wearing a Jesuit's biretta, says "Never", and North, who sits beside him, apparently asleep, says "No, never". "A bedroom scene. Lady Hamilton, grotesquely fat, but with traces of beauty in her features, rises from a curtained bed, arms and one leg extended in a burlesqued gesture of despair. She wears a nightgown and lace-trimmed cap. Behind her in the shadowed depths of the bed the night-capped head of her elderly and (?) sleeping husband, rests on the pillow. She looks, weeping, towards an open sash-window through which is seen a fleet sailing towards the horizon. In the window (left) is a cushioned window seat on which (besides a stocking) is an open book: 'Studies of Academic Attitudes taken from the Life'; on one page is a nude woman lying in sensual abandonment. On the right against the curtains of the bed is a dressing-table on which, besides toilet-articles, are a flask of 'Maraschino', a 'Composing Draught', and a pot of 'Rouge à la Naples'. On the carpeted floor (right) are objects from Sir W. Hamilton's collection, with an open book: 'Antiquities of Herculaneum Naples Caprea &c. &c.'; on the right page is a satyr chasing a nymph. "A crowded scene, the amateurs of the Pic Nic Society are dressing and rehearsing. The design may derive from Hogarth's 'Actresses dressing in a Barn' (BMSat 2403), Gillray stressing the contrast between his luxurious mise-en-scène and the squalor of Hogarth's players. The centre figure is Lady Buckinghamshire, enormous, florid, and gorgeous, her skirts outspread, standing before a dressing-table, touching one of many patches on her face and holding her part, that of 'Roxana' [in Lee's tragedy, 'The Rival Queens; or the Death of Alexander the Great']. Under her dressing-table is a square bottle of 'Usquebaugh' and a glass. On Roxana's l., with her back to the dressing-table, sits Lady Salisbury, her legs crossed and much exposed, pulling on a laced boot. Her neck is swathed with a spotted cravat as in BMSat 9908. Near her on the floor are the second boot, a pair of breeches, and her part: 'the Part of Squire Groom to be per[formed], by [Lady Salisbu]ry'. She gazes at the huge Lord Cholmondeley who stands in profile to the left., dominating the left. of the design. He is dressed as Cupid; a tunic covered with a design of ring-doves, hearts, arrows, and cross a torches defines a vast paunch across which is a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Amor Vincit Omnia'. He has butterfly wings, massive quiver filled with heavy arrows, and holds an arrow in his left hand. He stands impassively, his head wreathed with flowers. In the foreground, in front of Cholmondeley stands the tiny Lord Mount Edgcumbe in a swaggering attitude, studying his part: 'Alexander the Great', as in BMSat 9916. He wears armour, with a swathed cravat and vandyked ruff, and a helmet on which is a dragon spitting fire. Facing Cholmondeley and immediately behind Lady Salisbury is little Lord Derby blowing a French horn. Behind is a group of musicians: Lord Carlisle (l.) blows the bassoon with a melancholy expression, facing Lord Salisbury who pompously plays a small fiddle. Between them is Col. "An untidy shock-headed footman stands letting a tureen slide on to the table so that its contents pour out; in his I. hand is a dish containing a leg of mutton, held so that joint and gravy fall to the floor. He stands between a hideous old woman at the head of the table (rigth) and a comely young one on her right. A fat maidservant follows the footman, holding a dish. Behind the man hangs an elaborately framed bust portrait of a grim-looking man wearing an early eighteenth-century wig. A cockatoo screams from a cage (l.). A dog sits behind the old woman's chair, a cat puts its fore-paws on the table to lap the spilt soup.
