(The missionary is Mr. Quormbach, of the China Inland Mission.) Note the long hair in a topknot, and cap. It must have been Mr. Quormbach, one of the China Inland Mission men, who told us this story. The Chinese, in earlier days, had great veneration for the printed word--so much that there were men who went around spearing stray pieces of paper with printing, and burning it. In the huge censer in this picture there appeared parts of the Gospel of John one day, which one of the priests fished out and read. He was so impressed with what he found that he went to someone to inquire further about the Christian religion. I wish I knew the end of this story!"
