Description:
1-line red versals and 2-line red plain initials. Two large initials: f. 1r, at the beginning of the text of art. 1, historiated 10- line initial in pink on a blue background, containing a half-length profile of a poet or teacher in outline with a yellow dress; f. 10r, at the beginning of art. 2, decorated 9-line initial in pinkon a blue background, filled with red, yellow and green leaves., Binding: Original half brown leather binding over heavy bevelled wooden boards; sewn on two split leather thongs; the spine damaged. Remnants of one strap attached to the front cover, with iron pin on the rear cover., Due to intensive use the pages are badly rubbed and the legibility is impaired; whole passages have been rewritten by a later hand. The corners of the leaves are worn off. Holes and sewings., and Script: Copied by one hand in large Southern Gothica Textualis Formata (Rotunda). The opening majuscule of each verse set off in a separate column.

Manuscript on parchment (thick; holes and end pieces) of Eusebius, Historia ecclesiastica, translated into Latin by Rufinus, preceded by the prologue of Rufinus. Written presumably at the Premonstratensian abbey of St. Peter at Weissenau.

Binding: Nineteenth century, Germany. Bound in a grey-beige paper case with the title, in ink, on a label on the spine: "Eusebii Caesariensis Hystoria Ecclesiastica"., Decorative initials, 8- to 6-line, in red, some with modest penwork designs in red and black, or with foliage type appendages, in red, mark the beginning of each book; plain red 3-line initials, with knobs, for beginning of chapters. Rubrics, chapter numbers, and initial strokes, in red. Guide letters and instructions for rubricator., From the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 19049)., Outer edge of f. 1v damaged and repaired resulting in some loss of text., and Script: Written in gothic bookhand below top line by several scribes whose hands are uneven; text is written for the most part between the rulings.

Description:
Binding: Original Italian brown leather over thin wooden boards, the covers blind-tooled and decorated with gold dots. Spine with three raised bands. Remnants of two clasps, attached to the front cover by means of brass nails with engraved heads; palmette-shaped thin brass catches fixed to the rear cover with three nails each. The pastedowns and flyleaves are covered with carefully written notes and quotations on grammar, morals, education, etymology and meaning of rare words, variant readings in classical texts, etc., Script: Copied by one hand in careful Humanistica Textualis., and Space for headings was provided at the head of each Satire, but the headings were not executed. Satt. 2-16 open with a 3-line (6-line Satt. 6 and 7) plain initial (Capitalis) in blue. On f. 1r (Sat. 1) 6-line white vinestem initial integrated in a three-margins left border in the same style and colours; in the lower section of the latter, between two birds, there is a damaged coat of arms in a wreath. Binding: Nineteenth century. Quarter brown leather (with corners) and reddish brown marbled paper over cardboard. Gold-tooled flat spine with inscription: “PLUTARCHI VITA LUCULLI LATINE M.S.”., Headings in pale red. Art. 1 opens with a 6-line initial in red with the pen drawing for unexecuted white vinestem decoration. The 6-line initial at the head of art. 2 is purplish red on a blue background delicately heightened with silver arabesques, extended in the margin with red and green acanthus leaves. At the bottom of the same f. 387r there was a coat of arms flanked by two fleur-de-lys and four balls in purplish red and blue and red ribbons; the coat of arms has been cut out and the page has been repaired with a piece of paper; on it a modern coat of arms accompanied by the initials W and S (Walter Sneyd) is drawn in pencil., and Script: Copied by one scribe in a broad Humanistica Textualis Formata of "typographic" character and marked by unusual features such as the occasional use of round s in medial position and long i in final position, and inconsistencies in the use of ae/ẹ, the form of final s and m, etc. Majuscules at the beginning of lines protrude into the margin. Belonged to Sir Thomas Phillipps., Binding: Nineteenth century, France or Italy. Brown calf blind- and gold-tooled, with shells and caducei in the blind-tooled borders. Edges red., One very fine illuminated initial, 12-line, in gold on vibrant blue ground with white vine-stem ornament. The stems of the initial are divided into compartments and filled with penwork decoration in red, blue and green on parchment ground. Four small initials, 6- to 5-line, gold on vibrant blue ground with white vine-stem ornament. Headings in red., and Script: Written in an expert humanistic bookhand characterized by prominent approach and finishing strokes. The headings in red are by a different scribe.
