- Abstract:
- "An untidy shock-headed footman stands letting a tureen slide on to the table so that its contents pour out; in his Ieft hand is a dish containing a leg of mutton, held so that joint and gravy fall to the floor. He stands between a hideous old woman at the head of the table (right) and a comely young one on her right. A fat maidservant follows the footman, holding a dish. Behind the man hangs an elaborately framed bust portrait of a grim-looking man wearing an early eighteenth-century wig. A cockatoo screams from a cage (left). A dog sits behind the old woman's chair, a cat puts its fore-paws on the table to lap the spilt soup. Below the title: 'Take off the largest dishes, and set them on with one hand, to shew the ladies your vigour and strength of back, but always do it between two ladies, that if the dish happens to slip, the soup or sauce may fall on their cloaths, and not daub the floor, by this practice, two of our brethren, my worthy friends, got considerable fortunes. . . . When you carry up a dish of meat, dip your fingers in the sauce, or lick it with your tongue, to try whether it be good, and fit for your masters table - .' - Abstract:
- In a London street, young boys inflict various forms of cruelty upon animals. In the centre, a boy (Tom Nero), identifiable by the badge on his shoulder as a pupil of St. Giles's Parish School, thrusts an arrow into a dog's anus; he ignores the offer of a large tart from a sympathetic young gentleman (said by Paulson to be a compliment to the young George III). To his left on the front of the balustrade, a boy draws a prophetic picture of Tom hanging from the gallows. Below Tom, another boy ties a bone to a dog's tail. In the lower left, a dog disembowels a cat. In the center foreground another boy kneels on the cobblestones, about to release a cock, as another boy prepares to a stick at it; the boy behind him holds a second cock. On the balustrade one boy holds a torch while his companion blinds a bird with a wire. Further to the left on the balustrade a group of boys laugh at the sight of two cats fight as they are hung by their tails from a gibbet-shaped lamp post. Above them a cat with a pair of wings tied to its back has been tossed out the attic window to see if it could fly
- Description:
- Title engraved above image., State from Paulson., Second state, with price mostly burnished from plate. It was reissued, with some lines strengthened by the engraver James Heath, in The works of William Hogarth (London : Printed for Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy ..., 1822); another edition was published by Baldwin & Cradock in 1835. See Paulson., First in a series of four: The four stages of cruelty., Quotation engraved below image: "While various scenes of sportive woe, the infant race employ, and tortur'd victims bleeding shew, the tyrant in the boy. Behold! A youth of gentler heart, to spare the creature's pain. O take, he cries - take all my tart, but tears and tart are vain. Learn from this fair example - you whom savage sports delight, how cruelty disgusts the view while pity charms the sight.", and Temporary local Medical Library subject terms: Prevention of cruelty to animals.

- "A bogus wizard stands raising his wand while a grotesque figure, in answer, snorting fire, emerges in clouds of smoke from a rectangular aperture in the floor (left), dagger in one hand, cup of 'poison' in the other. - Abstract:
- A stereotyped image of an old maid who wears a cap and sits very upright in a high-back chair as she reads a newspaper, The Morning Herald. She has a large, hooked nose and wears spectacles, her lips pursed with disapproval at what she reads. She has a cat in her lap and a parrot sits on the chair back; her feet rest on the fire grate before the stove on which sits a kettle. In the foreground on a carpet and a rug beside her are three dogs. On the table beside her are a box of snuff and back-scratcher. A folding screen forms the background. On the mantel are a pair of statuettes of a woman with a spear and a dog leaping at her side (presumably Diana) and a taxidermized cat in a glass case. The picture on the wall above these objects further amplify the subject

- Abstract:
- "A crowded interior. An old maid, grotesquely lean, spectacled, and hideous, sits in an arm-chair beside her fire (left) on which a concoction in a saucepan boils over, surrounded by fierce flames. This she stirs with a spoon but turns to the right to pore over the recipe, which is in her left hand. One bare foot with deformed toes rests on a stool beside which are a spike-toed high-heeled shoe and a stocking. A table beside her and the floor below it are crowded with bottles, jars, and medicaments, with a pestle and mortar and a lighted candle. The candle sets fire to her cap, and the flame reaches a little bird-cage hanging from the ceiling. A cat walks under her petticoats; a tiny lap-dog lies in a cushioned band-box lid at her feet. A second cat claws towards a mouse which runs up the pole of a perch on which stands, a draggled and angry cockatoo. A pug-dog also looks up at the bird. Against the wall is a stuffed cat in a glass case; above it is a burlesque picture of Susanna and the Elders. A neat curtained bed is on the right. The chimney-piece is decorated with Diana (burlesqued) urging on the hounds to seize Actæon. On it are three peacock's feathers, bottles, spills, a shell, a Chinese mandarin, &c. The fireplace is lined with pictorial Dutch tiles."--British Museum online catalogue, description of an earlier state

- Abstract:
- In an elegantly furnished sitting room, a man sits at a table in a dressing gown and night cap, his tongue hanging out of his mouth and his gouty leg resting on a foot stool as his pulse is taken by a physician (right). The physician looks at a pocket watch with a long chain; he also holds a walking stick in his right hand. The ill man is in the midst of putting together an elaborate dinner party. In addition to an inkstand with quill pens, on the table is a book, "Glasse's art of cookery" open to a recipe on how "to dress a turtle". On the table is an envelope addressed "To Ald. Guttle, London" and one to "Sr. A. Pepperpor" and a letter inviting the Alderman to dine. Another document contains the "bill of fare" which lists turtle soup, venison, chickens, hams, pheasents, etc. At his feet a dog scratches as a cat approaches. On the left a pretty, much young woman leans agains a chair as she watches the scene. The room is decorated with a map of the West Indies over the elegant mantelpiece on which sit a statute of a goat and two candlesticks whose bases are obese figures sitting cross-legged. Two other portraits on either side of the fireplace: on the left a cupid-like figure holding two strings to which are attached two doves; on the right, a portrait of a corpulent man in a wig
