Acquired from Maggs Bros. of London in 1957 by L. C. Witten, who sold it the same year to Thomas E. Marston., Binding: 1800-1810, Italy. Half bound with a brown calf spine and goatskin corners, bright pink paper sides and red edges. Three green, gold-tooled labels on the spine: "Manuscri," "S Ambrosi de Cain" and "Seculi XII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 135, 151, 158, 159 and 197, all of Hautecombe provenance., Heavily stained but with no loss of text., Plain red initials, 6- to 4-line, with small "pearls" on the thin strokes of the letters, introduce each text. Headings in red. Instructions to rubricator and guide letters., and Script: Written by two scribes in late caroline minuscule. Scribe 1 (ff. 1r-61r): preference for uncial d, angular abbreviation strokes, and a slightly larger module of script than that used by Scribe 2 (ff. 61r-83r).

Description:
Binding: Sixteenth century. Brown leather over cardboard boards, the covers blind-tooled with a triple fillet lozenge inside a floral roll frame, the center and the corners gold-tooled with two different floral tools. Spine with four raised bands and remnants of gold-tooled lilies in the compartments. Edges painted blue. Marks of two pairs of ties., Headings in red. Red heightening (stroking) of the majuscules. 2-3-line flourished initials (with guide letters) in red with penwork varying from pale red to purple. A large (10 lines) decorated flourished initial in red, with developed purple penwork (“R” instead of “D”) in littera duplex style on f. 229v. Two Gothic historiated initials on gold background with floral marginal extensions: f. 1r: St. Jerome with lion and boy holding open a book (damaged); f. 25v: a monk copying., Script: Apparently four scribes: A, Iohannes de Carnago, is the main scribe and copied ff. 1r-260v (with the exception of 8 lines at the bottom) in Gothico-Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria; B copied from the bottom lines of f. 260v to f. 270v, in Humanistica Textualis Libraria; C copied ff. 271r-275v in Gothico-Humanistica Textualis Libraria; and D copied ff. 276r-304v in Gothico-Humanistica Semitextualis Libraria., and The codex belonged to the Diocesan Library of Dunedin, New Zealand. Description:
Binding: 1800-1810, Italy. Half bound in brown calf with bright pink paper sides that have been covered with tan paper; edges spattered blue-green. Two gold-tooled labels on spine, the first left blank and the lower one reading "Saecul XII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 135, 151, 153, 159, and 197, also from the Cisterican abbey of Hautecombe. and Numerous pen and ink initials of good quality, 8- to 3-line, drawn in red. The initials are constructed of thick vine stems, divided in half and swelling at the ends, issuing sprouts of intertwining stylized foliage. On f. 10v the letter E is formed from a bird and its extended wing; on ff. 75r and 103r the initials terminate in animal heads. The most important initials, ff. 1v, 13r, 36v, 62r, 75r, 114r, 115v and 119v, are touched with patches of ochre and summary modelling in the same color. On f. 1v the continuation capitals are filled in with red and ochre. Plain initials and headings in red. Remains of instructions to the rubricator along outer edge perpendicular to text (e.g., ff. 119v, 120v).

Description:
Binding: 18th-19th centuries, England. Brown calf, gold-tooled. Striped turn-ins., From the estate of Wilfred M. Voynich. Purchased in 1959 from H. P. Kraus by Thomas E. Marston., Part I: Two illuminated initials in parallel positions on f. 1r, beginning mid-page and extending almost to the bottom of the leaf. The first initial composed of a gold trellis edged in black with heads of a grotesque devouring the trellis at top and bottom, and foliage designs in green and white scrolling around the body of the initial against pink interior with white highlight and gold balls. The whole on a rectangular ground tapering to a point at bottom, with white designs. The second initial, somewhat narrower and less ambitious in design, gold edged in black with blue interior and thin white design in center and two rosettes, one at top, the other at bottom, and a third stylized floral motif in center, all on a pink ground in the same shape as the first initial. Also on f. 1r, 7-line initial divided red and blue with interior foliage designs in green and white on parchment ground, and red and blue penwork designs around exterior of letter. For major text divisions, fine medium blue and/or red initials, 9- to 6-line, with intricate penwork flourishes in red and blue, each accompanied by several lines of oversize letters for the first few words of text, with letters either in one color with designs in the other or alternating red and blue. Small penwork initials, red or blue with modest design in the opposite color, throughout. Headings, running headlines and vertical lines within text columns, in red. Remains of instructions to rubricator (some perpendicular to text in gutter) and guide letters for decorator., Part II: One gold initial, 4-line, with purple penwork designs on f. 194r. Blue initials with red penwork, 9- to 2-line, throughout. Headings and initial strokes added, in brown and red, unsophisticated drawings of birds, animals, leaves and grotesques in upper and lower margins., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-173): Written in neat gothic bookhand, above top line; glosses added by a variety of hands, some exhibiting anglicana features. Part II (ff. 174-197): Written in gothic bookhand with some marginalia by contemporary and later hands.

Brown goatskin with the arms of comte Chandon de Briailles gold-tooled on both sides. Edges, headcaps, and doublures also gold-tooled., Illuminated title page, severely rubbed and stained, with full border, white vine-stem ornament on red, blue, green and gold ground with white dots, in inner border with ribbon interlace. In lower border wreathed medallion within narrow gold bands, supported by two haloed angels, one dressed in green, the other in red; central shield of medallion blank. Included in border are a standing and a seated putto. Historiated initial, 6-line, gold, with a portrait of St. Ambrose seated at a lectern and reading, against a blue sky. 8 illuminated initials, 5-line, in gold against blue, green and red grounds with white dots and white vine-stem ornament extending into the margins to form partial borders. Headings, running titles and foliation (Roman numerals), in red., Many pages stained with some loss of text; f. 220r-v mostly illegible., and Script: Written in bold humansitic cursive script that slopes toward the right by a single scribe, above top line.
