"An old sow lies exhausted on a pile of straw outside a sty roofed with dilapidated thatch. She is beset by thirty-two voracious piglets with human heads. [The identifications are those of Miss Banks, confirmed by Lord Holland. The identifications of Wright and Evans are incomplete; Ellenborough is called the Speaker.] John Bull, a clumsy yokel in a smock, holding a pitchfork, looks over the low stone wall surrounding the sty. He exclaims: "O Lord - O Lord! - well! - I never had such a Litter of hungry Pigs in all my life before! - why, they's beyond all count! - where the devil do they think I shall find Wash & Grains for all their Guts? - zookers, why they a drain the poor old Sow to an Otomy! - 'e'cod She'll make but bad Bacon for Boney, when they's all done sucking o' her - !!!' In the centre of the struggling mass of pigs is Fox with Grenville on his left. and Grey on his right. He bestrides the Duke of Clarence, whose hind-quarters only (clad in blue and buff) are visible, and supports his right. hind-leg on the back of the Prince of Wales, who is in back view but wearing a ribbon and unmistakable. Grey also clambers over the Prince. On Grenville's l. is his fat nephew, Lord Temple. The head next Grenville is that of Sidmouth, across whose back Lord Henry Petty scrambles open-mouthed. Above Petty, Sheridan scrambles avidly over the sow; Erskine, in his Chancellor's wig scampers over the sow's hind leg. Lauderdale, whose body is chequered to indicate tartan, is behind Grenville, next him (l.) is Vansittart; on the left of the latter is a group of three plump pigs one with the head concealed, the others smiling with complacent anticipation; they are Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn and his two brothers, see BMSat 9760, &c. Behind them (l.) three pigs scamper towards the sow (l. to r.): Tierney, the Duke of Bedford, and Lord Derby. Behind again, and on the extreme left. are five rather smaller animals: George Walpole, Adair (half cut off by the margin), Burdett, Horne Tooke wearing clerical bands, and Lord Carlisle. On the r. of Grey and the Prince are Lord St. Vincent, with a foreleg on the Prince, Courteney, a foreleg on Grey, Lord Spencer who has secured a teat, and Windham who clambers downwards from the sow's shoulder. Between Courteney and Spencer is a pig whose head is concealed, 'not meant for any body'. Climbing up the farther side of the sow and on the r. are Lord Ellenborough in his wig, Lord Fitzwilliam, and Moira who scampers on the creature's back."--British Museum online catalogue.

John Bull (Symbolic character)--Caricatures and cartoons.
"On the r. a rustic fountain gushes from the mouth of Lord Henry Petty, whose head and shoulders emerge from a stone wall or rock surrounded by trees. The water expands and falls by billowing stages into a sea, the horizon (l.) inscribed 'Unfathomable Sea of Taxation'. In this sea 'cormorants', with human heads and huge beaks (projecting from their profiles) and pelican-like pouches, are greedily fishing, while a rowing boat founders, throwing into the water John Bull, who drops an oar inscribed 'William Pitt'; only his head (submerged up to the mouth) and arms emerge. The water from Petty's mouth is inscribed (thrice) 'New Taxes'; the upper level of the fountain: 'New Salt Tax', 'new Coffee Tax', 'new Tea Tax', 'new Hop- Tax', 'new Malt-Tax', 'new Assessed Taxes', 'New Tax on Sugar', 'New Spirit Tax', 'New Tobacco Tax', 'New Candle Tax', 'New Glass Tax'. The lower level: 'new Cyder Tax', 'New Soap Tax', 'New Auction Tax', 'New Table Beer Tax', 'New Snuff Tax', 'new Horse Tax', 'new Servants Tax', 'new Leather Tax', 'new Dog Tax', 'New Hair Powder [Tax]', 'new Soap Tax', 'new House Tax', 'new Land-Tax', 'New Stamp-Tax', 'new Window Tax', 'New Hat Tax'. The sea is inscribed 'New-Property-Tax' [in whose waves John Bull drowns], 'New Legacy Tax', 'New Iron-Tax', 'New Excise-Duties', 'New Game Tax'. The most prominent bird is Grenville, on a rock by the water's edge; he stands on a pile of large fish, and throws up his head to swallow two monster fish: 'Treasury' and 'Exchequer'. Behind his back stand Sidmouth and Sheridan, greedily taking fish from Grenville's pile. Beside Grenville stands Fox, equally large, stooping over the water, to receive a dense mass of fish which leap as if by suction into his mouth; other fish swim and leap towards him. Beside Fox is the head and elongated neck of Moira, with a large lobster in his beak. On the extreme left. Windham skims the water, flying towards a number of crabs. Grey (Lord Howick) swims, holding in his beak two eels. A bird in judge's wig has dived head first; its solid shape suggests Ellenborough rather than Erskine. On the r. three birds skim downwards over the rocks towards Sidmouth; they are Bedford followed by Horne Tooke (wearing bands, cf. BMSat 9716, &c.) and Burdett. On the water's edge in the middle distance stands Buckingham, wearing a ribbon and swallowing three large fish. Little Lord Derby beside him stoops for one small fish. In the sky a flight of countless birds makes for the fish. Only the three leaders have human heads; the first has the features of Lauderdale, the one behind him resembles Adair."--British Museum online catalogue.

"Two sailors, Hawkesbury and Castlereagh, seated side by side, row a small ship's boat or dinghy, 'the Billy Pitt', towing the ships of the Danish fleet. Canning, in the stern, holds the ropes attached to the ships. He looks alert and roguish, the others are grave. They are going through rough water caused by 'Leviathan' (l.), a porpoise-like monster with three heads and a forked tail. The heads spout water at the boat, particularly at Canning. They are (r. to left.) Grenville, who spouts "Opposition Clamour"; Howick (whom Canning had replaced as Foreign Secretary), spouting "Detraction"; and St. Vincent, spouting "Envy". The boat nears the shore, indicated by a rock projecting into the sea (r.); on this is an anchor leaning against a pile of cannon-balls stacked against the wall of a small thatched inn. On the stock of the anchor sits John Bull, a stout countryman, holding a frothing tankard, and waving his hat. He shouts "Rule Britannia! - Britannia Rules the Waves!!" On the inn is a placard: 'Sheerness Harbour'; it has a sign hanging over the water: a profile bust portrait of George III: 'The Good Old Royal George'. Above it waves the Union Jack. On the horizon countries of Europe are indicated by low-lying coastlines backed by tiny buildings, all on fire, the flames and smoke covering the sky. These are, l. to r.: 'Poland', 'Russia', 'Germany', 'Prussia', 'Italy', 'Holland'. In the smoke Napoleon capers in impotent rage, sword in hand, his feathered bicorne flying upwards from his head. In his dismay he drops a paper: 'Projet pour Sub-juger [sic] la Mer' [cf. BMSat 10599, &c.]. On the extreme left., behind the Danish ships and isolated from Poland, is Copenhagen, its buildings on a larger scale, with a fortress flying a British flag. The buildings behind the fortress are on fire."--British Museum online catalogue.

"John Bull, blind, maimed, and ragged, walks (right to left) near a chasm, the edge of which stretches across the foreground of the design. His wooden right arm terminates in a hook to which is attached a cord from the collar of a lean greyhound with the head of Pitt (as in BMSat 8794). Pitt drags him forward and slightly towards the gulf; in his mouth is a large bare bone, his collar is inscribed 'Licenc'd to Lead'. In John Bull's left hand is a staff, on his back a burden inscribed 'Loans'. He has a wooden leg, which a dog with the head of Sheridan and a collar inscribed 'Licenc'd to Bite' is biting savagely. Behind and on the extreme right is a dog with the head of Grey, and a collar inscribed 'Grey Hound'; he bites John Bull's coat. Fox, a mastiff with a fox's brush, stands behind Pitt, glaring fiercely, on his collar is 'Licenc'd to Bark'. "John Bull crouches on hands and knees on a flat-topped rock: 'Rock of Broad-Bottom'd Security' [cf. BMSats 10530]. On his back is an enormous money-bag: 'The Sinking-Fund - i.e - Taxations of 42 Millions pr Annum'. Petty stands astride on the guineas in the gaping mouth of the bag, shovelling a cascade of coins to greedy ministerialists who stand below, outside the stone gateway of the 'Treasury', whose wall is on the left John, a yokel, out-at-elbows, looks up to say mournfully: " - Toss away! Toss away! my good Boy! toss away!!! - oh how kind it is, to ease me of this Terrible Load!" Petty, looking down, answers: "Patience, Johnny! - ar'nt I tossing-away as fast as I can? ar'nt I reducing of your Taxes to sh/17 & 6d in the Pound? - why you ought to think yourself quite comfortable & Easy, Johnny!" Those nearest the rock are Windham and the fat Lord Temple, with his back to it, catching the coins that overflow from a great heap in the peer's robe which his uncle, Grenville, holds up. Between Grenville and Windham the Marquis of Buckingham has a brimming hat-full. Behind Buckingham' Howick holds up a large hat high above his head. Sidmouth, bending obsequiously, catches some of the overflow from Grenville's store; between him and Temple, a dog, its collar inscribed 'Vansit[tart]' gapes for the small droppings from his master's receptacle (he was Secretary of the Treasury). Behind Grenville, Ellenborough receives a heavy shower on his head. Sheridan, as Harlequin (cf. BMSat 9916), his wooden sword held behind his back, holds out with a servile gesture a (full) bonnet rouge shaped like a fool's cap. Behind him, Lauderdale, in Highland dress, holds out a Scots cap. Towering above Sheridan, Moira holds up an enormous cocked hat, trimmed with the Prince's feathers, and receives, after Grenville, the largest harvest of coin. In his right. hand are papers: 'Price of Stocks'. Between him and Ellenborough, the Duke of Clarence holds up a chamber-pot, inscribed 'Royal Jordan' [see BMSat 7909, &c.]. Behind him is the head of the Duke of York. Erskine, on the left, holds out the Purse of the Great Seal. Next him are Spencer, holding up a cocked hat, and Norfolk, holding up a punch-bowl, inscribed 'Majesty of the People', the toast given by him, which, inter alia, led to his rightemoval from the Privy Council (see BMSat 9168, &c). An aquiline profile, next Norfolk, suggests George Hanger. A youthful face on the extreme left. may indicate Lord Holland. Within the shadow of the Treasury gate other hats are held out, suggesting many more within. ..."--British Museum online catalogue.

"A lumbering wagon drawn (l. to r.) by eight asses is stuck fast, up to the axles in water; the asses strain hard to drag it up a steep slope to dry land. Its dilapidated tilt is much patched and is labelled 'British State Waggon 1804'. The wagoner, Addington (r.), kneels on an adjacent bank, and shouts to a fat and jovial John Bull, dressed as a volunteer, who stands on the opposite bank of the deeply sunken lane, his bulldog beside him. Addington wears a smock, but his powdered hair is in a black bag. He holds his long whip and his hat in his right. hand, and extends his left. arm, shouting, " - help, Johnny Bull! - help! - my Waggon's stuck fast in the Slough! - help! help." John, who holds his bayoneted musket, looks down at Addington, pointing behind him with outflung r. arm at thirteen horses with human heads above and behind him on rising ground. He answers: " - stuck fast in the Slough! - ay to be sure! - why dost'nt put better Cattle to thy Wain? - look at them there Horses doing o' nothing at all! - what ether they matches in Colour, if they do but drag the Waggon out o' the Mud! - don't ye see how the very thoughts o' being put into Harness makes 'em all love and nubble one another?" The horses, [The identifications (most being self-evident) are those of Miss Banks, the alternatives in brackets being those of E. Hawkins. Wright and Evans arrange them differently and omit Spencer and Lansdowne.] though close together, are in groups. On the extreme left., and rather behind the others, Lord Spencer (or Carlisle) rubs noses with Carlisle (or Lauderdale), Erskine (in wig and bands) with Wilberforce. In front of this group the bulky Lansdowne (or Norfolk) lies on the ground, asleep, his back to the others. Next, Grey turns his head towards the haughty Buckingham, who wears spectacles and a Garter ribbon. Their backs are turned to the main group of four: Fox, with a foreleg placed on Grenville's shoulder looks up affectionately at the latter, who responds with a complacent smile. Pitt watches the pair with haughty benignity; Canning, behind, watches them intently. On the extreme right. Sheridan (a plump piebald), scowling fiercely, kicks up his heels at Windham, who retorts with a blast of excrement, his head turned towards Fox and Grenville. In the foreground (l.) is the stage-wagon (the slowest form of transit), drawn by its eight undifferentiated asses. The tilt is open at the back, showing it crammed with bundles, &c. The centre-piece is a bulging sack: 'Budget for 1804', from which project papers inscribed 'Taxes'. A treasure-chest is inscribed 'Treasury'; coins pour from a hole in its side. It is flanked by two bundles: 'Secret Service Money' and 'Family Pickings'. A bundle of 'Pensions' consists of bulky papers inscribed 'Sinecure'. Large volumes tied together are 'New Acts of Parliament'. Other papers are 'Defence against Invasion'; 'State of Ireland'; 'East Indies'. A bundle of 'Loans for / 84' [sic] contains 'Navy Bills' and 'Exchequer Bills'. There are also three tiny barrels of 'Gun Powder' and a bundle of muskets inscribed 'Volunteers'. From the side of the wagon hangs a basket of 'Family Medicine' containing two bottles labelled 'Broth[er] Bra[gge]' and 'Brother Hiley'."--British Museum online catalogue.
