Abstract:
Grey stands in the center pulling back a curtain on the large painting (right) addressing the three men (probably Peel, Cumberland, and Wellington) who look on in amazement. Grey says, "Gentlemen this is a fine color'd picture representing Futurity. The idea of which was concieved [sic] by an injured people and painted by a new and promising artist. Reform." Reading from the left Peel looks at himself in the painting seated in a chair at a loom, "Why if there a'nt me at a spinning Jenny." Cumberland, hat flying off, looking at himself depicted in the painting on his backside, "And me dying on a dunghill." And Wellington closest to the painting that depicts him as a wounded soldier holding a broom and begging with his cap in hand, observes "And me begging." In the painting is a tower with the British and French flags the former with the year 1814, referencing the Wellington's successful campaign to end the Peninsular War

"Wellington sits behind a small cloth-covered table flanked by eight other representations of himself, as depicted in recent caricatures, apparently all by W. Heath. The arrangement is evidently that of Charles Mathews' 'At Homes', see British Museum Satires No. 14714, &c., Wellington, like Mathews, being in propria persona at the table. In this guise he wears the robes (indistinguishable from Coronation robes) and collar of the Garter and the order of the Golden Fleece and a (crown-like) ducal coronet; his head is turned in profile to the right. Immediately below him, the head and hands of another Wellington, who is crouching on the floor, project from the tablecloth; he grasps a royal crown, and wears a cap coloured blue and resembling a tam-o'-shanter, but perhaps intended for a coronet. The other Wellingtons, all standing (left to right): [1] A mute as in British Museum Satires No. 15501, in profile to the right. [2] A Grenadier, full-face and rigidly at attention, much as in British Museum Satires No. 15768, but without the musket. [3] A ratcatcher stooping to the left and touching his hat, the cage in his left hand (cf. British Museum Satires No. 15806). [4] Aged and cloaked, wearing spectacles, with bowed head, he clasps a cross in both hands. [5] The old woman in a soldier's coat of British Museum Satires No. 15721, facing, and apparently in angry altercation with, the seated Wellington. [6] The coachman of British Museum Satires No. 15731, in profile to the left, holding shaft and lash of his whip as if they were the reins of a four-in-hand which he is driving. [7] Wellington in uniform, directed to the left, wearing his plumed cocked hat and holding up with a furtive expression a sword with a damaged blade in a dilapidated scabbard. [8] A mummy-case with an aperture to show Wellington's head with the forefingers compressing his mouth; below the aperture is the word 'Mum'. (Apparently from a satire on Wellington's silence as to his intentions on Catholic Relief until the eve of the opening of Parliament, see British Museum Satires No. 15659.) King William IV dressed as a sailor dances in the centre of a semicircle of ministers who have black bodies and are partially draped. Among the ministers are Peel and Scarlett on the left, Lyndhurst and Wellington on the right both of whom wear nose-rings. Scarlett encircles Ellenborough, who, with Sugden, is behind the King. Their tribal dance celebration alludes to the relief that the ministers must have felt to be able to retain their positions with the new reign. William IV was a popular King and a stark contrast to George IV and was liable to wild bursts of passion as is suggested here. He and the Duke of Wellington (then prime minister) got on very well, hence the retainment of his ministers. He is dressed in sailor garb in reference to his years in the navy. The tribal dress of the ministers refers to the far-flung shores that William visited

"The irradiated head of George IV in profile to the left, is almost covered by the darkly shaded head of Wellington, which is almost full-face, but glaring to the right with fierce yet apprehensive melancholy. From this darkened mask slants down and to the right a broadening shadow which passes across a terrestrial globe at the base of the design, covering an island inscribed 'England', but leaving 'Ireland' (right) unobscured. "A cricket-match. The King (left), who is nearest the picture-plane and larger in scale than the others, has just bowled, with arms flung wide, a huge ball inscribed 'Reform', hitting the batsman, Wellington, in the stomach and knocking him against the stumps. Grey fields near the King, exclaiming, 'Hu.a he's Out'; the King: 'Aye and with a Ground hopper too'. Farther off (left to right) are Burdett (in top-boots), Lord John Russell, who says 'Thats what I call a Purger' [see British Museum Satires No. 16602], and Brougham. All the players wear shirts and waistcoats. There are also two others in the field (as spectators they wear coats), Aberdeen (indicated by tartan) who says 'Foul Foul', and Cumberland. In the background are many frantically cheering spectators and a marquee from which flies a flag inscribed 'Umpire Public Opinion'."--British Museum online catalogue

The fragment contains references to Viscount Townsherd (Lieutenant-General of the Ordnance in the Greenville Ministry in 1763), Sir Charles Frederick (1709-1785), and James Syme are among the legible names.

"George IV, dressed as a magician, rises from the throne (right) to give a wooden sword to Canning, who is dressed as Harlequin. A clown (intended for Melville) turns his back on Canning and the King, to run off, registering anger and alarm. Wellington stands fiercely, with legs astride, both arms raised, holding his sword; he wears uniform with boots and cocked hat. On the left Eldon and Westmorland stand together, with flexed knees, registering senile dismay. The latter, dressed as Pantaloon, drops his crutch. The King, in a robe bordered with symbols (serpents, &c), has the curled wig and whiskers which he had discarded (cf. British Museum Satires No. 14637). He chants: Harlequin! the Gods above have now decreed That thou and all thy measures shall succeed. Fear not old El--n, nor that Pantaloon, West----d, the bold Duke, nor the Scotch Clown. Who e'er opposeth thee, thou by love shalt thrive; Thy Genius and my Cunning him shall drive To H--ll's abyss. A satire of the 1832 Reform Bill, with a see-saw with the Crown as the fulcrum. At the center is William IV, waving the Union flag; to the right is Lord Grey, seated on the lever, helping William balance with a scroll marked 'Union', with John Bull standing underneath, wedging the lever up with the 'Reform Bill'; and to the right the Duke of Wellington tumbles backwards as the lever breaks under the weight of him and two huge scrolls marked 'Anti Reform'.

"A cock with the head of Wellington stands tied to a peg, on a round board, supported on a low post (right). A short truculent-looking woman in a man's patched coat, with a bundle of sticks under her arm, stands beside the bird, which is undamaged and in fine feather; she invites its enemies to throw: 'Shy away he's a real good un.' An angry cleric, in shovel hat and apron, stands with a bundle of sticks under his arm; he says : 'I'll have every tenth throw.' "Paul Pry", one hand resting on his umbrella, stoops forward, about to throw a stick topped by a little figure of Wellington as a coachman, touching his hat, as in British Museum Satires No. 15731; his face is hidden by his raised arm.
