- Manuscript on parchment of Lucan, Bellum civile, with scholia. Preceded by Epitaphium Lucani, 4 lines only.
- Description:
- Binding: Nineteenth century. Light brown pigskin, blind-tooled, with brass fastenings., Decorative initials, red or blue, 12- to 4-line, with simple designs in opposite color, for each book. Rubrics added sporadically. Plan of Brindisi appears in the margin of f. 15v (II.610) to illustrate Caesar's siege of the city; on f. 47v is a schematic circular drawing of Paulus in the center, surrounded by Pelion, Ossa, Otrix, Pindus and Olympus., Rubbing, staining, trimming of leaves, and worm holes result in some loss of text and scholia., and Script: Main text written above and below top line in a small early gothic bookhand by two scribes. Scribe 1) ff. 1r-37r; Scribe 2) ff. 37v-91v. First letter of each verse written to left of text between double rulings or on middle of three rulings; right-hand margin justified. Scholia, primarily at beginning of codex, written in a contemporary hand.

- 9 manuscript charters, on parchment, all with seals. 1) Grant by Richard Aberbas to William de Ingelfeld [Englefield] of a meadow in the village of Berehefeld [Burghfield] in Berkshire, for an annual rent of 4d., ca. 1190. 2) Grant by William de Middelwod, vicar of Altarnum, to John of Exeter, Canon of St. Peter's Cathedral in Exeter, of a tenement extending from the main street of Exeter to the barbican of the Exeter Castle. Witnessed by 9 citizens of Exeter, including the mayor, John de Fenton, and the bailiff, William de Okemtom [Okehamton], 1279-1280. 3) Quitclaim from Robert Patrick de Malo [de Malpas] to William Maillard of Sutton, granting relief from all customary services formerly performed by Maillard for three caructates of land at Kagworth in Sutton, including plowing, reaping, and haymaking, in return for one horseshoe. Witnessed by several residents of Sutton, ca. 1200. 4) Indenture grant by John of Exeter, Master of St. John's Hospital, to Philip de Zelebregg of a heritable tenement in Smezenestrete in Exeter. Witnessed by several citizens of Exeter, including John de Godessalve, bailiff, 1284 Oct. 18. 5) Grant by Aymeric de St. Maur, Master of the Knights of the Temple in England, to Henry de Wethelesburghe of all the lands in Wethelesburghe (Wellesbourne in Warwickshire) held by the English Chapter of the Knights, for the rent of 5 marks of silver per year and one third of Henry's chattel at his death. Witnessed by 9 members of the English Chapter, ca. 1200. 6) Royal license by Edward I for John de Methelwold, permitting him to grant a messuage in Methwold in Norfolk to Bromehill Priory. Issued at Westminster, 1293 Jun 14. 7) Confirmatory charter by Roger de Mowbray of a gift of lands to the Cistercians of Fountains Abbey. De Mowbray confirms the original gift of the lands in Nutwith (Yorkshire) by their holder in service, Richard de Hedon, as a grant in free alms in perpetuity and quitclaims the annual rent of a pound of pepper. Witnessed by several residents of Kirkby Malzeard, ca. 1181. 8) Confirmatory charter by Ranulf de Blundevill, Earl of Chester, of several gifts of land to the Premonstratensian canons of Newhouse (Lincolnshire). The Earl confirms gifts of land made by several of his men in fee and offers his formal protection to the canons and their house. Witnessed at Maidenwell, ca. 1199. 9) Confirmatory charter by Pope Honorius IV to the Prior and Priory of St. Swithun's in Winchester concerning an agreement about a pension of 40s. awarded to the Rector of Little Hinton in Wiltshire, originally made before Robert of Bingham, Bishop of Salisbury, with the consent of William of Raleigh, Bishop of Winchester. Issued at St. Sabina, Rome, 1286 May 6.

- Decoration: running heads, initials, and rubrics in red; some contemporary marginal commentary., Script: written in a heavily abbreviated gothic script., and These fragments, which appear to be from the same manuscript, are contained in Zi +156 (Bernhard von Breydenbach, Prefatio in opus transmarine...), in which the fragments are used as front and back endpapers.

- Manuscript on parchment of 1) Petrus Comestor (d. ca. 1179-1189), Historia scholastica, Genesis. 2) Petrus Comestor, Historia scholastica, Exodus. 3) Petrus Comestor, Historia scholastica, Leviticus, chapters 1-15. 4) Raymundus de Pennaforti, Summa de casibus poenitentiae. 5) Pseudo-Augustine, De vita christiana (also attributed to Pelagius, d. ca. 423-429). 6) Augustine (doubtful authorship), Sermo 351, De paenitentia agenda. 7) Anonymous Italian Franciscan, Visiones. These seventeen visions are said to have been written in 1243, before the 1st Council of Lyons which took place in 1245 and during which Emperor Frederick II was deposed. 8) An additional vision by Peter of Treviso O.F.M., which he had in Bolzano (?) in 1245, at the time of the Council of Lyons mentioned in art. 7. The final rubric seems to indicate that the author of art. 7 was friar Stephen of Fiorentino. 9) Well-known poem on the Twelve Apocalyptic Stones (cf. Rev. 21:19-20), often ascribed to Marbod of Rennes (d. 1123).

The script of art. 9 is larger., On the front fly-leaf r a table of contents written in pencil by the owner S. Harrison Thomson. Purchased in 1972 from Thomson on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., Red headings, red heightening of majuscules and red plain initials, mostly 2-3 lines; the red initials were to alternate with blue ones but the latter have not been executed. Many initials are anyhow missing. Guide-letters are seen close to the fold or to the edge of the pages. The running titles were also planned to be executed in alternately red and blue majuscules, but the blue letters are missing; there are no running titles after f. 20 (quire II)., and The ink on the first pages has flaked, making them very difficult to decipher.

- Binding: 18th-19th centuries, England. Brown calf, gold-tooled. Striped turn-ins., From the estate of Wilfred M. Voynich. Purchased in 1959 from H. P. Kraus by Thomas E. Marston., Part I: Two illuminated initials in parallel positions on f. 1r, beginning mid-page and extending almost to the bottom of the leaf. The first initial composed of a gold trellis edged in black with heads of a grotesque devouring the trellis at top and bottom, and foliage designs in green and white scrolling around the body of the initial against pink interior with white highlight and gold balls. The whole on a rectangular ground tapering to a point at bottom, with white designs. The second initial, somewhat narrower and less ambitious in design, gold edged in black with blue interior and thin white design in center and two rosettes, one at top, the other at bottom, and a third stylized floral motif in center, all on a pink ground in the same shape as the first initial. Also on f. 1r, 7-line initial divided red and blue with interior foliage designs in green and white on parchment ground, and red and blue penwork designs around exterior of letter. For major text divisions, fine medium blue and/or red initials, 9- to 6-line, with intricate penwork flourishes in red and blue, each accompanied by several lines of oversize letters for the first few words of text, with letters either in one color with designs in the other or alternating red and blue. Small penwork initials, red or blue with modest design in the opposite color, throughout. Headings, running headlines and vertical lines within text columns, in red. Remains of instructions to rubricator (some perpendicular to text in gutter) and guide letters for decorator., Part II: One gold initial, 4-line, with purple penwork designs on f. 194r. Blue initials with red penwork, 9- to 2-line, throughout. Headings and initial strokes added, in brown and red, unsophisticated drawings of birds, animals, leaves and grotesques in upper and lower margins., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-173): Written in neat gothic bookhand, above top line; glosses added by a variety of hands, some exhibiting anglicana features.
