Subjects include Carter's dislike of the "dullness and sameness" of life in the two small towns; local events related to the uprising of 1830; social engagements; and the cost of living for a consular official in Chile. The journal also contains lists of servants' wages; Carter's furniture and personal property; and relative prices in Valpariso and Coquimbo.
