Manuscript on parchment, composed of three parts, of Petrus Riga, Aurora, Biblia Versificata (a Latin verse translation of the Bible). Parts I and III in the same format and possibly from the same manuscript.
Description:
Binding: Nineteenth century, Belgium. Tan calf over wooden boards, blind-tooled with the Arenberg arms on the sides. Title on spine: "Sacrae Scripturae excerptae/ Circa 1225-50". Remains of old fore-edge tabs., Parts I and III: Red initials, plain or with modest designs throughout. Headings in red often added to right of text. First letter of each verse stroked in red or ochre, often by drawing a single line the length of the written space. Part II: Plain initials and headings in red throughout., Presented by Otto Rauschberg in 1956 to Thomas E. Marston., and Script: Parts I and III (ff. 1-72 and 113-136): Copied by multiple scribes in small gothic bookhand, with first letter of each verse usually aligned on the second vertical bounding line. Part II (ff. 73-112): Written by multiple scribes in a larger module and a neater gothic script than that in Parts I and III; each verse is justified by the placement of the final letter along outer vertical ruling. Script has often been retraced.

Binding: Nineteenth century. Light brown pigskin, blind-tooled, with brass fastenings., Decorative initials, red or blue, 12- to 4-line, with simple designs in opposite color, for each book. Rubrics added sporadically. Plan of Brindisi appears in the margin of f. 15v (II.610) to illustrate Caesar's siege of the city; on f. 47v is a schematic circular drawing of Paulus in the center, surrounded by Pelion, Ossa, Otrix, Pindus and Olympus., Rubbing, staining, trimming of leaves, and worm holes result in some loss of text and scholia., and Script: Main text written above and below top line in a small early gothic bookhand by two scribes. Scribe 1) ff. 1r-37r; Scribe 2) ff. 37v-91v. First letter of each verse written to left of text between double rulings or on middle of three rulings; right-hand margin justified. Scholia, primarily at beginning of codex, written in a contemporary hand.

Binding: Nineteenth century. Red velvet case. Leather placemarks on fore edge., Script: Written in an elegant French minuscule, chapter divisions added in margins by a later hand., and Twenty-seven fine aniconic initials, 20- to 7-lines. The initials are drawn in black pen, filled with yellow, brown or blue, most with interlace knots at midpoints and terminals, some with dragon heads, infilled with intertwining palmette foliage against irregular red, blue, green, and yellow panelled grounds. Prologues open with 10- to 4-line initials, red and blue with terminals in a leafy "arabesque" design. Chapters with 3-line initials in red. 1-line initials, running headings, and rubrics throughout. Marginalia sometimes outlined in red.

Binding: the 16th century binding, now detached, is plain parchment over pasteboard, sewn on three split leather thongs. On the spine is written in large Gothica Textualis Formata, the title “Marc. Marulus +”; on the lower edge in Capitalis: “M. Marull.”, In Latin., Purchased on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., Script: written in Beneventan script., and Two fragments from a manuscript on parchment, used, together with a few other small fragments of Latin manuscripts, for reinforcing the binding of a printed book: Marcus Marullus, De institutione bene beateque vivendi libri sex (Solingen, Iohannes Soter, 1540).

Binding: Contemporary binding without leather covers or spine: bevelled beach boards (too small for the codex), worm-eaten, sewn onto three double leather thongs; remains of one clasp attached to the front board, with brass catch on the rear board. Front endleaves: large fragment of a Latin document on parchment that mentions church officials, written in Gothica Cursiva Libraria, dated 1431-1443. The rear endleaves are a fragment of a pattern sheet on parchment, probably from the papal chancery, containing short and longer quotations from papal bulls and other documents, some of doubtful authenticity, in various types of calligraphic script., ff. 66-69 blank and uncut., Script: Copied by two hands, both writing a very small Humanistica Cursiva Libraria: A (ff. 1r-65r) and B (ff. 70r-78v)., and There is little consistency in the decoration. Headings, partly in Capitalis, in red or black (often missing). Opening words or lines in Capitalis. On f. 22v-26r the majuscules are stroked in red; plain red initials somewhat imitating Romanesque models ff. 22v-25r. All other initials (2-3 lines) have guide letters in the margin but were not executed. Curious pointing hands with sleeves in the margins of the Biblical texts.
