Abstract:
A composite manuscript written in different locations and periods: Part I was written in Italy in the first half of the 14th century; Part II was probably written in England (or Northern France?) at the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th century. The index was added on blank leaves in Italy in the 14th century, perhaps at the same time that Parts I and II were joined together to form the present codex. and Manuscript on parchment composed of two distinct parts. Part I: 1) Brief prologues to the Pauline Epistles, paraphrasing or extracted from the argumenta of Haimo of Auxerre, Expositio in epistolas Sancti Pauli. 2-4) Notes for sermons arranged according to the liturgical year. Part II: 5) Unidentified sermons. 6) John of Wales, Breviloquium.

Binding: Nineteenth century, England. Backs of quires cut in for original sewing. Brown calf case, blind-tooled., Part I: Red initials, 3- to 2-line, with crude harping designs in black; headings and paragraph marks (art. 3) in red. Instructions for rubricator. Part II: Flourished initials, 3- to 2-line, alternate red and blue with penwork designs in the opposite color. Paragraph marks alternate red and blue; headings, often added in margin, in red. Remains of guide letters for decorator., Purchased from C. A. Stonehill in 1958 by Thomas E. Marston., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-24): Scribe I copied ff. 1r-6v in small gothic bookhand with southern features; Scribe II copied ff. 7r-24r in a somewhat more angular gothic bookhand; additions by different scribes on f. 24r-v. Part II (ff. 25-78): Arts. 5-6 copied in small neat gothic bookhand, by a single scribe; some marginalia added in anglicana script (e.g., f. 46v); art. 7 added in a less careful gothic bookhand.

5 fine illuminated initials, 30- to 7-line, in blue or pink with white filigree on blue and red grounds framed in blue or red accentuated at the corners by gold dots. Infilled with intertwining or angular vines, some with biting head terminals, mauve or blue with white highlights and gold dots. Ascenders and descenders, red, mauve and blue terminating in spiralling serifs with biting animal heads or grotesques against cusped grounds. Two initials with vines issuing from upper and left corners, blue with white highlights ending in grotesques. 3- and 2-line calligraphic initials, red and blue with blue and red penwork. Plain initials alternating in red and blue. Headings in red; running titles (chapter numbers) alternating red and blue. Description:
Binding: 14th-15th centuries, Spain. Original sewing on five tawed skin, double supports laced into beech boards. Plain, wound natural color endbands. Single parchment leaf (front) and bifolium (rear), from what appear to be two different Hebrew Bible manuscripts, serve as pastedowns and spine-lining; they have been cut out around the sewing supports. Yellow edges. Covered in what was originally blue tawed skin (now faded) with two fastenings, the catches on the lower board and the straps attached with star-headed nails. Traces of title (?) scratched onto skin of upper board., Part I: One illuminated initial, rubbed, f. 1r: blue with white highlights on dark red ground with white highlights; terminals of ground extend up and down as modest border in blue, dark red and gold. Flourished initials of various sizes, styles and quality: blue with red penwork designs, red with blue, red with purple (ff. 75r-119r) and red and blue divided with penwork in purple (e.g., f. 88v); some flourished initials with border extensions (e.g., f. 110v). Running headlines in red and blue; paragraph marks alternate red and blue. Traces of guide letters for decorator. Part II: Spaces for decorative initials remain unfilled., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-120): Written by a single scribe in small gothic book hand. Five cylindrical brass bosses and corner and side-pieces on each cover. Remnants of two engraved brass clasps attached to the rear cover, the catches with the inscription “Maria”. Yellow edges., Red stroking of majuscules. Red headings only in art. 23. Red plain or slightly decorated initials, 2-9 lines, sometimes taking the shape of a littera duplex or a flourished initial (f. 49v); no initials in artt. 2-3. At the top of the left-hand column of f. 1r there is a blank space (for a small miniature?)., Script: Probably six scribes, all writing highly abbreviated Gothic scripts., and Watermarks: var. Briquet 14871-14872 and 14549?.

Binding: Spine with four raised bands. On the spine and partly on the covers, an 18th century paper title label with handwritten inscription "Ancien / Manuscrit / sur / Velin / Complet / et ********" (cfr. MSS 940 and 941)., Headings and underlining in red. Alternately red and blue paragraph marks. Alternately red and blue 2-line half inset flourished initials, respectively with penwork at the opening of the chapters, with guide letters. 6-line littera duplex with penwork in the same colours on f. 1v (opening of art. 2). Red heigthening of the majuscules in artt. 1 and 3., and Script: Probably copied by one hand, writing a small, rapid Gothica Textualis/Semitextualis Libraria with numerous abbreviations.
