"A bedroom scene. Joanna Southcott sits in an arm-chair, attended by three women and four doctors. Between her legs is a large tub inscribed 'Living Water', into which water gushes from a tap projecting from under her petticoats. She leans back with extended arms, exclaiming: "Shiloh! let not this groupe dismay thee | Come forth into the World I pray thee!" One doctor, Reece, superintends the flow of water, kneeling in profile to the left on a large volume: '[R]eec's Medical Guide'. In his pocket is a paper: 'Account of Wonderful Pregnancies'. Behind him a second doctor sniffs at a tumbler of water, saying, "This is a very pretty rig! | Nothing but water d .... n my Wig!" Two others talk together on the right, one peers through a microscope into a goblet; the other asks: "What do you see in the water, Doctor!" He answers: "Bubbles Doctr "the earth hath bubbles, as the water hath ['Macbeth' I. iii]". I said it was all my eye." Behind him, on the chimney-piece, are a medicine-bottle and the bust of a lank-haired man wearing clerical bands. Three women stand behind Joanna's chair and in front of the curtains of a bed. One (left) holds out a lace cap, saying, "Doctor here is Shiloh's cap! bless me! why he has got a watery head! The next says: "Pray Doctr take care of the cawl if there is one." The third, offering a steaming bowl, says: "Come my blessed Lady sip some of this heavenly caudle I have made you." In the foreground (left), Tozer, dressed as an artisan, sits on a three-legged stool, corking up bottles of water. He is identified by a paper hanging from his pocket: 'Tozer Preacher to the Virgin Johanna'. "The artist introduces us to the laboratory of a so-called alchemist. A roguish Jew and his familiar are busily engaged in the transmutation of metals; the servant, with a pair of long- nozzled bellows, is engaged in kindling the furnace, in which is a crucible; various retorts, alembics, and other paraphernalia of the 'black arts,' are scattered about, as well as a formula for 'changing lead into gold'; although the alchemists at best could only contrive to accomplish the reverse transmutation. Suggestive prints are hung on the walls of this chamber of mystery, such as the portrait of the notorious 'Count Cagliostro, discoverer of the Philosopher's Stone,' and the figure of the spurious 'Bottle Conjurer.' A military officer, in the next apartment, is turning his opportunities to more practical advantage by embracing, with a certain display of ardour, a pretty maiden who is nothing loth, the daughter, it appears, of the philosophically minded investigator."--Grego, J. "John Bull as a Chinese, in Chinese costume, hugely corpulent sits full-face in an arm-chair, legs extended, hands resting on the sides of his paunch. He looks to three doctors on the left, the foremost being Grey, who leans towards him, pointing to his colleagues (left), and saying suavely, 'This deformity is quite inconsistent, believe me, with the Nature of your Constitution & therefore must be got rid of, I will undertake with your approbation, to remove it & my assistant Doctor Russell here will prepare you for the Operation'. Lord John Russell, on the extreme left, speaks confidentially to Althorp who is in back view: 'I once thought that a case of this description ought to be treated with great caution and even wrote as well as talked a great deal about it, but now I am quite of a different opinion I think there is nothing like cutting away thro' thick & thin!' J. B.: 'I ca'nt say that my bodily health was ever better, or that I ever felt stronger tho' to be sure I am not growing younger; but then every one is telling me how deformed I am grown of late & this tumour which I have had from my infancy is all a Mass of Corruption'. On the right and slightly farther from the picture-plane, the rival doctors, Peel and Wellington, are in consultation. The Duke: 'I say the Man has no defect in his Constitution & that what they call corruption is necessary to his existance--but now because he would not believe me, but choses rather to submit to the experiments of these rash operators --Wharnecliffe who is a sensible Man lays all the blame on me'. Print shows three fashionable dandies in a well-furnished room. One (left) sings, seated, and with a leg resting on a second (lyre-backed) chair; he leans sentimentally, hand on heart, towards a lutanist reclining on a (Regency) sofa playing an ornate curiously shaped instrument. The third stands behind the sofa, playing a flageolet, and admiring himself in a mirror above the ornate fireplace. The vocalist holds an open music-book: 'Love has eyes.' On the floor beside him are two others: 'The Lovesick Swain set to Music' and 'Our Warbling Notes and Ivory lutes Shall ravish every ear.' Two whole length portraits flank the mirror, one of a lady in quasi-Elizabethan dress, the other of a man similarly dressed, both having pinched waists and full busts. Below one is a picture of 'Vacuna' [Goddess of rural leisure], a blowzy woman lying under a tree; below the other, a grotesque 'Narcissus' admires his reflection. Elizabeth Chudleigh, Duchess of Kingston, attending her trial for bigamy. The maids of honour hold a bottle marked "cordial". They are followed by a fat chaplain, a physician with a bigwig and sword, and a lean apothecary with a big enema syringe and "Seven figures walk from left to right. First is the (so-called) Duchess of Kingston, short and stout. She is saying "By God and", and holds out her hands with a gesture of affirmation. Behind her walk three young women, her 'maids of honour', who are tall and slim in contrast with their mistress. One carries a large square bottle inscribed "cordial". All four ladies are dressed alike in the fashion of the day with low bodices and high coiffures decorated with feathers and flowers. Next comes a fat clergyman, his mouth open as of shouting. He is followed by the physician wearing a big-wig and sword. Last walks the apothecary, lean and bent, also wearing a sword, and carrying an enormous and ornately decorated syringe which rests on his right shoulder."--British Museum online catalogue

Elizabeth Chudleigh married the Hon. Augustus John Hervey secretly in 1744; the marriage was not registered until 1759. In 1769 a consistory court declared her unmarried, after which she married Evelyn Pierrepoint, 2nd Duke of Kingston, in 1770. She was tried and convicted for bigamy in 1776, the surgeon Caesar Hawkins having testified to the birth of her son by Hervey.
