Abstract:
Manuscript on paper, composed of four parts. Part I (ff. 1-13): Calendar, etc. Part II (ff. 14-138): Jacobus de Voragine, Legenda aurea. Part III (ff. 139-173): Anonymous letter to John Huss written after the Council of Constance; 35 articles of erroneous dogmatic teaching of the Greek church, written in the circle of the papal court during the endeavour to reconcile the Greek and Roman Churches at the Councils of Ferrara and Florence (1437-39). Part IV (ff. 174-269): Latin-German vocabulary.
Description:
Binding: Ca. 1500 (?), Austria. Parchment stays from early manuscripts in center of quires. Original (?) sewing on three tawed skin, double, twisted sewing supports laced into grooves in flush wooden boards and fastened with square pegs. The grooves are filled in with glue. The spine is rounded and backed (naturally?) and back bevelled. A plain, wound endband is sewn on a tawed skin core and also laced and pegged. The spine is lined with coarse cloth in the center and vellum at the ends, extending on the outside. Covered in plain, kermes pink, tawed skin (sheep?) possibly a later addition. Trace of one fastening, the catch on the upper board. There may have been a chain attachment at the head of the lower board. The insides of the boards have been varnished; off-set impressions of pastedowns from early manuscripts on both boards., Part I: KL in calendar in blue; other charts and diagrams in shades of red and black. Small plain initials, headings, initial strokes and underlining in red. Parts II and III: Red or blue initials, 4- to 3-line, some with simple designs. Headings, paragraph marks, initial strokes, underlining in red. Guide letters for decorator. Part IV: Plain initials, and initial strokes, in red, for ff. 174r-176r., Purchased from H. Rosenthal in 1946 by H. P. Kraus who sold it in 1957 to Thomas E. Marston., Script: Each part written by a single hand in hybrida script., and Watermarks: unidentified mountain in gutter.

Fragment of a legendary of Saints Nicostratus, Claudius, Symphorian, Castorius and Simpliius, stonemasons martyred by Diocletian. The passage mentions the quarrying of porphyry columns for the temple of Diocletian.
Description:
Bergendal Collection of Mediaeval Manuscripts (Bergandal 115). Purchased from Bernard Quaritch, Ltd., (Sotheby's sale, 2011 July 5, lot 28) on the Herman W. Liebert Book Fund, 2011., Leaf has several small marks and holes indicating that it was used as part of a later bookbinding., and Script: written in a proto-Carloingian miniscule. The scribe has been identified (by Bernard Bischoff) as Cundpato, monk of the Benedictine monastery of Freising.

The Walter O. Evans Collection of James Baldwin is comprised of a typescript draft of Baldwin's Another Country (New York: Dial Pub., 1962) and correspondence sent from Baldwin to Mary Garin-Painter, David Adams Leeming, and Eugene Lerner dating from 1953 to 1987. In his letters Baldwin discusses his writing projects and personal life (ranging from his relationships to his experience living abroad in France and Turkey). Baldwin also reflects on his experience at the MacDowell Colony where he was in residence while working on his novel Giovanni's Room. The correspondence constitutes a window into Baldwin's creative process and life during this period.

The Burnett Family Papers consist of diaries, memoirs, invitations, and miscellaneous printed material. The diary of Lester Burnett, the father of W. C. Burnett, chronicles his journey to San Francisco by way of Panama, and his early days there. The entries run from July 13, 1850 to January 8, 1851. The diary of W. C. Burnett also describes a voyage to San Francisco and his early days there. Entries run from April 20 to May 24, 1854. In addition, there is an undated typescript memoir by Jane Cleveland Burnett, W. C. Burnettt's wife, entitled, "My Memories of Early California Days." There are also two folders of invitations to events in the San Francisco area dating from 1851 to 1891.
