Description:
Smith, a graduate of Yale College and a Connecticut physician, moved to New York where he became one of the founding editors of the Medical Repository (1797), the first American medical journal. He died in the yellow fever epidemic in New York in 1798. This pastel portrait hangs in the Steiner Room.
Elijah W. Carpenter attended the first session of the Medical institution of Yale College in 1813-1814. He stayed only one year and did not obtain an M.D. from Yale. This engraving is located in the Elijah W. Carpenter papers. Inscription: "J. G. Chandler Lith. Boston."
