Fine historiated initial (12-line) on f. 1r, the author seated at a lectern, pink, purple, green, red, and blue foliage on a gold ground, edged in black, with delicate white highlights; an exuberant vine and foliage border in three margins; the upper margin with a bar, gold and blue, with white highlights. Eight illuminated initials (9- or 8-line) on ff. 14v, 29v, 45r, 61r, 79r, 98v, 115r, 132r in the same style, borders in outer margin. Fine penwork initials throughout, blue with red penwork or vice versa (7- to 4-line). Sewn on three tawed skin, slit straps attached to oak boards, with brown and natural color endbands (later additions?) sewn on tawed skin cores laid in grooves on the outside of the boards. Covered in orange/brown sheepskin neatly blind-tooled with rope interlace in concentric frames. Spine: double fillets at head and tail and outlining the supports on the spine; fine diapering with double fillets in the panels. Four flower-shaped catches on the lower board, two wanting. Remains of vellum label (worm eaten) on the spine and pieces of string used as place marks. Off-set impressions of medieval liturgical manuscript on front and back pastedowns. Orange edges. Sticky from excessive oiling., One illuminated initial, f. 4r, 6-line, gold, filled with red and blue penwork in geometric patterns. The penwork extends the whole length of the text column to form a partial border, terminating in the upper and lower margins in a scroll of blue penwork with small flowers, heart-shaped leaves and red dots. Binding: 1800-1810, Italy. Half bound in brown calf with bright pink paper sides that have been covered with tan paper; edges spattered blue-green. Two gold-tooled labels on spine, the first left blank and the lower one reading "Saecul XII". Bound in the same distinctive style as Marston MSS 50, 125, 128, 135, 151, 153, 159, and 197, also from the Cisterican abbey of Hautecombe. and Numerous pen and ink initials of good quality, 8- to 3-line, drawn in red. The initials are constructed of thick vine stems, divided in half and swelling at the ends, issuing sprouts of intertwining stylized foliage. On f. 10v the letter E is formed from a bird and its extended wing; on ff. 75r and 103r the initials terminate in animal heads. The most important initials, ff. 1v, 13r, 36v, 62r, 75r, 114r, 115v and 119v, are touched with patches of ochre and summary modelling in the same color. On f. 1v the continuation capitals are filled in with red and ochre. Plain initials and headings in red. Front cover has metal cross and other ornaments; rear cover is stamped. Patterned linen doublures on inside covers., Colophon (fols. 298v-299v) indicates the manuscript was written for Ovanē Ōrpēli (also Awrpēli), a member of the Ōrbelean family which held extensive domains in the same province. Codex was executed at the monastery of Noravank' by the scribe Momik, who was assisted by the vardapet Pawłos. These two scribes completed the greater part of the writing by AE 756 (=AD 1307), when Momik had serious trouble with his eyes. Manuscript was completed by another scribe, Yohanēs or Yovhannēs. Momik recovered his sight in AE 780 (=AD 1331) and wrote the colophon in which he gives interesting information concerning the copy of the manuscript and the feudal lords of Siwnikʻ. The book then passed into the possession of Archbishop Step'anos-Tarsayič, also a member of the Ōrbelean family. In AD 1331 Archbishop Step'anos-Tarsayič had the manuscript "adorned with gold and silver" by order of prince Biwrt'ēl, the head of the Ōrbelean family. Since replaced by current leather binding., and In AE 855 (=AD 1406) the manuscript belonged to a priest named Sēt' (fol. 235r). Later inscriptions indicate that the manuscript was acquired by the craftsman Awēt and his brothers and sons, who in turn offered it to the church of Surb Yakob (St. James) in the town of Cʻałman (fol. 235v); a second indicates the manuscript subsequently belonged to an individual named And[r]ēas and his sons (fol. 236r).
