Through megaphones the lecturer explains that in the cholera season people are compelled to use wood of one kind or another. If they do not use fire-wood they will have to use coffin wood. They are exposed for sale without protection of any kind; in addition raw water is poured on the cut surfaces to keep the melons fresh and moist. Incidentally the flies and dust contaminate the melons. To the right is a tray full of peeled water chestnuts which is also handled by many before actually sold and so constitutes a danger. Two small tables rest on a platform meant to be carried in a parade.
