These seventeen visions are said to have been written in 1243, before the 1st Council of Lyons which took place in 1245 and during which Emperor Frederick II was deposed. 8) An additional vision by Peter of Treviso O.F.M., which he had in Bolzano (?) in 1245, at the time of the Council of Lyons mentioned in art. 7. The final rubric seems to indicate that the author of art. 7 was friar Stephen of Fiorentino. 9) Well-known poem on the Twelve Apocalyptic Stones (cf. Rev. 21:19-20), often ascribed to Marbod of Rennes (d. 1123).

The script of art. 9 is larger., On the front fly-leaf r a table of contents written in pencil by the owner S. Harrison Thomson. Purchased in 1972 from Thomson on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund., Red headings, red heightening of majuscules and red plain initials, mostly 2-3 lines; the red initials were to alternate with blue ones but the latter have not been executed. Many initials are anyhow missing. Guide-letters are seen close to the fold or to the edge of the pages. The running titles were also planned to be executed in alternately red and blue majuscules, but the blue letters are missing; there are no running titles after f. 20 (quire II)., and The ink on the first pages has flaked, making them very difficult to decipher.

Binding: 18th-19th centuries, England. Brown calf, gold-tooled. Striped turn-ins., From the estate of Wilfred M. Voynich. Purchased in 1959 from H. P. Kraus by Thomas E. Marston., Part I: Two illuminated initials in parallel positions on f. 1r, beginning mid-page and extending almost to the bottom of the leaf. The first initial composed of a gold trellis edged in black with heads of a grotesque devouring the trellis at top and bottom, and foliage designs in green and white scrolling around the body of the initial against pink interior with white highlight and gold balls. The whole on a rectangular ground tapering to a point at bottom, with white designs. The second initial, somewhat narrower and less ambitious in design, gold edged in black with blue interior and thin white design in center and two rosettes, one at top, the other at bottom, and a third stylized floral motif in center, all on a pink ground in the same shape as the first initial. Also on f. 1r, 7-line initial divided red and blue with interior foliage designs in green and white on parchment ground, and red and blue penwork designs around exterior of letter. For major text divisions, fine medium blue and/or red initials, 9- to 6-line, with intricate penwork flourishes in red and blue, each accompanied by several lines of oversize letters for the first few words of text, with letters either in one color with designs in the other or alternating red and blue. Small penwork initials, red or blue with modest design in the opposite color, throughout. Headings, running headlines and vertical lines within text columns, in red. Remains of instructions to rubricator (some perpendicular to text in gutter) and guide letters for decorator., Part II: One gold initial, 4-line, with purple penwork designs on f. 194r. Blue initials with red penwork, 9- to 2-line, throughout. Headings and initial strokes added, in brown and red, unsophisticated drawings of birds, animals, leaves and grotesques in upper and lower margins., and Script: Part I (ff. 1-173): Written in neat gothic bookhand, above top line; glosses added by a variety of hands, some exhibiting anglicana features. Binding: Sixteenth century, Germany or Italy (?). Resewn (early) on three tawed skin slit straps laced through tunnels in the edge of beech boards to channels on the outside and pegged; channels filled with glue. A pink, green and white, five core endband is sewn through a leather lining on a tawed skin core laced into the boards and pegged. Covered in brick red sheepskin with corner tongues; blind-tooled with an X and sparse use of oak-leaf edging tool. Two truncated diamond catches on lower board, the upper board cut in for the red fabric clasp straps which were attached with star-headed nails. Corner fittings and six-petalled central medallion. Traces of title, in ink, on spine. Spine of the bookblock partially eaten by rodents., Script: Written in small gothic bookhand; arts. 2 and 4 in less formal scripts., and Two historiated initials, 7- and 4-line. Folio 1r: mauve initial with white filigree on blue ground with white filigree, edged in gold, showing a man drawing water from a well, against gold ground, illustrating the Biblical passage "Haurietis aquas...." Serifs, ending in heart-shaped red leaves, on blue and red cusped grounds, with gold balls, extending along the inner margin to form a partial bar border. Perched on the top of the initial is a small bird, grey with red wings. Folio 1v: blue initial with white shading against dark red ground with white filigree. Ascender blue against dark red ground, extending along text column to form a partial bar border. The initial shows the good Samaritan riding on a donkey, against gold ground. Numerous flourished initials, 4- to 3-line, alternate red and blue with penwork designs in the opposite color. Running headlines in red and blue. Paragraph marks alternate red and blue. Guide letters for decorator visible beneath initials.

In Latin., Written by two scribes in tiny gothic textura. Scribe 1: ff. 2v-91v; Scribe 2: ff. 91v (last folio of quire 8)-95v. Several later hands have added scribbles, prayers, and inscriptions on ff. 1r-2r, 10r, 95v, 96r, 97v, 98r, 99r., Small (6-line) and rather crude historiated initials. The initials for Ps. 52 (the Fool) and Ps. 109 (the Trinity) are missing. In each initial, the figure drawn in black and colored pink, green, and/or blue on a gold ground; the initials attached to cusped, tapering bar border, blue, red, and gold, with white highlights, with ivy terminal, black with red and green leaves. Gold and blue calligraphic initials (2-line), with blue and red penwork respectively; 1-line initials, alternating red and blue. KL monograms, gold on red and blue, with white highlights. Because the initial I was placed in the margin without an inset space in the text, the illuminator often missed it (e.g., for Ps. 70 on f. 42r; for Ps. 113 on f. 62r, and for Ps. 125 on f. 68v)., and Binding: 15th-16th centuries. Resewn on three two-layered tapes of tawed skin attached to wooden boards. The endband cores are of tawed skin with a tawed skin braid at the head, a new endband added at the tail. The spine is square and the cover adhered to it. Covered in tawed skin, originally pink, with corner tongues. Cover repaired at spine and two corners and two silver clasps added. In a flexible grey leather pouch.
