Description:: Folder 10 contains a particularly significant letter dated March 8, 1795, from Judith Cocks to James Hillhouse. Cocks was most likely enslaved to Hillhouse or formerly enslaved by him. Her letter (two pages) recounts the abuse she and her son Jupiter (enslaved to Hillhouse) were suffering at the hands of Lucy Backus Woodbridge, cousin to James, then living in Marietta, Ohio. Also mentioned in the letter is another daughter, possibly Hagar, enslaved to James Hillhouse.
