Two men walk towards each other, each with a lady hanging to each arm, all have their faces concealed by some part of their dress, hat, or collar, or both. One man has a round hat, with a fantastically curved brim projecting downwards. The other has a huge crescent-shaped cocked hat with the peaks dipping over face and back. Both have high, stiff, pointed collars projecting above the high collars of coat and waistcoat. The ladies wear bonnets with projecting scoops or a straw hat with broad contorted brim, with high neck-ruffles. A couple walk arm-in-arm, and in the background two ladies walk away. Another lady sits alone under a tree (left). The men wear knee-breeches. "A young woman plays the piano (right) with painful intentness, and sings, as does the man who holds open her music-book, inscribed 'On Rosy Bed by Tinckling Billy'. A middle-aged military officer stands full face playing the flute. A fat elderly 'cit' sleeps in an arm-chair (left); his wig has fallen off and his legs rest on another chair. Behind him a very obese man and an ugly and over-dressed woman with a grotesquely thin neck sing from the same piece of music: 'On Rosy Bed'. He warms his back at a blazing fire; the feathers in her hair are alight in one of the candles on the chimney-piece. A small boy blows a toy trumpet, a dog howls and a cat miaows, standing on an open music-book inscribed 'Water Part ....' "Three handsome young men, stooping slightly, walk languidly arm-in-arm along a pavement in profile to the left. They have a strong family resemblance, with variations in profile and in the size of their whiskers. They are dressed alike, except for differently curving hat-brims, in tail-coats with sleeves gathered at the shoulder, but without the clumsy bulk of the Jean-de-Bry, cf. BMSat 9425, stocks resembling those worn by Skeffington, see BMSat 9557, but less extravagantly swathed, frilled shirts, double-breasted outer waitcoats, riding-breeches, and boots with deep tops. "Five Germans seated at a round table, gormandize savagely on cabbage and sausages. Three are grossly fat and coarse-featured and plebeian; one of these (r.) has tucked the table-cloth round his neck (cf. BMSat 8145). A lean military officer sits in back view plying spoon and fork with elbows raised; a lean dog laps from his plate, one paw on his knee the other on the table. Cocked hat and sword are on the ground beside him. A thin and elderly man of more polished appearance puts down his head to the mound of greenery on his plate, which he shovels up with spoon and fork; his knife lies on the table-cloth. His hat and gold-headed cane are under his stool. A fat cook enters (l.) carrying a large steaming dish piled high with sauerkraut and sausages. On the table are a 'Vinegar' bottle and fragments from over-full plates. On the wall are a map of 'The Mouths of the Rhine', showing the 'German Ocean'; an oval bust portrait of 'Arch-Duke Charles' [see BMSat 8835], with a gross profile resembling that given by Gillray to the Duke of Clarence; a picture of a row of pigs whose heads emerge from sties to feed in a trough. "A crowded scene, the amateurs of the Pic Nic Society are dressing and rehearsing. The design may derive from Hogarth's 'Actresses dressing in a Barn' (BMSat 2403), Gillray stressing the contrast between his luxurious mise-en-scène and the squalor of Hogarth's players. The centre figure is Lady Buckinghamshire, enormous, florid, and gorgeous, her skirts outspread, standing before a dressing-table, touching one of many patches on her face and holding her part, that of 'Roxana' [in Lee's tragedy, 'The Rival Queens; or the Death of Alexander the Great']. Under her dressing-table is a square bottle of 'Usquebaugh' and a glass. On Roxana's l., with her back to the dressing-table, sits Lady Salisbury, her legs crossed and much exposed, pulling on a laced boot. Her neck is swathed with a spotted cravat as in BMSat 9908. Near her on the floor are the second boot, a pair of breeches, and her part: 'the Part of Squire Groom to be per[formed], by [Lady Salisbu]ry'. She gazes at the huge Lord Cholmondeley who stands in profile to the left., dominating the left. of the design. He is dressed as Cupid; a tunic covered with a design of ring-doves, hearts, arrows, and cross a torches defines a vast paunch across which is a tricolour ribbon inscribed 'Amor Vincit Omnia'. He has butterfly wings, massive quiver filled with heavy arrows, and holds an arrow in his left hand. He stands impassively, his head wreathed with flowers. In the foreground, in front of Cholmondeley stands the tiny Lord Mount Edgcumbe in a swaggering attitude, studying his part: 'Alexander the Great', as in BMSat 9916. He wears armour, with a swathed cravat and vandyked ruff, and a helmet on which is a dragon spitting fire. Facing Cholmondeley and immediately behind Lady Salisbury is little Lord Derby blowing a French horn. Behind is a group of musicians: Lord Carlisle (l.) blows the bassoon with a melancholy expression, facing Lord Salisbury who pompously plays a small fiddle. Between them is Col.
