"A scene in a barber's shop during the Westminster Election of 1784. The centre figure is a man seated, full-face, swathed in a sheet, while a boy (left) applies tongs to his hair, which a man (right) is combing. From the pocket of the boy protrudes a label inscribed 'Hood'; from that of the other, '[Wr]ay'. On the ground projecting from the sheet is '[F]ox'. In the foreground (left) a customer is seated, clasping his bald head with a concerned expression as he reads a newspaper; behind his head is a notice, 'State of the Poll'. Two men, their hair freshly curled, stand in profile to the left before a looking-glass (left) adjusting their cravats. On the extreme right a barber shaves a man whose face is lathered; the barber's apron is inscribed 'Success to the Poll'. Next, a stout man wearing top-boots, standing full-face, turning his head upwards and in profile to the left, stanches a cut on his cheek with a towel. A boy stands beside him holding a barber's basin. In the centre foreground two dogs tug at a bag-wig; one (left) wears a 'Hood & Wray' favour, the other a Fox favour. A large hat on the ground has a 'Hood and Wray' favour. A barber's block has been overturned (left). On another (left) is a wig. "Three visitors regard with amusement a soldier who acts as barber. A soldier sits (left) outside a tent, his hair lank and undressed, his chin lathered, a cloth round his neck. The barber stands flourishing a razor; he is in full regimentals, wearing a busby, with intrenching tools (a spade and axe) thrust through his belt. Facing him in profile to the left stands a lady with a man in riding-dress on each side of her; one points, the others raise their hands in amused surprise. A grinning black boy in livery, wearing a turban and carrying a riding-whip, stands behind them. A sentry stands on duty beside the tent with his musket across his shoulder. Another soldier stands on the extreme right, his hands crossed on his breast. A row of tents, backed by trees and the contour of a hill, forms a background. "Design in a circle. Three men sit by a rectangular supper-table, a grandfather-clock behind them points to XI. The man on the left is having his jack-boots pulled off by a small boy; the boy stands astride his right leg pulling hard, his back to the man, who is scowling and pushes his other booted foot against the boy's back; on the floor are a pair of spurs, a pair of slippers, and a boot-jack. A man (right) wearing a night-cap, but otherwise completely dressed and wearing spurred boots, leans one elbow on the table, his face contorted as if in pain, he holds his hand to his thigh. On the table beside him is a small packet inscribed "Diaculum". In the centre, and on the farther side of the table, the third man leans both elbows on the table, his hair is tousled and his eyes are shut. A man-servant behind, yawning, is carrying off a square box, probably a wig-box, while a maidservant stands on the right, a candle in one hand, a warming-pan in the other, watching with amusement the efforts of the boy to pull off the boot. "A whole length satirical portrait of a slim and foppish young man, in three positions. He stands (left) in profile to the left, his right hand resting on the head of a high cane and holding a large three-cornered hat. In the centre he stands in back view, his hat under his left arm, his cane in his right hand. On the right he stands full-face, in a rather swaggering pose, cane in his right hand, hat in his left. The three attitudes show the fashion of the day. Hair loose and full over the forehead, a horizontal side curl below each ear, and a tightly-bound pigtail queue. A fitting coat double-breasted at the chest, cut away to show the lower part of a waistcoat ending at the waist; its special feature is an elongated and narrow lapel projecting beyond the shoulders. The front part of the cart is cut off by the right edge of the design. The horseman wears a naval uniform, his hat flies off, he tugs at his rein with both hands.
