"A foppish parson, directed to the left, wearing a voluminous surplice over a high 'dandy' (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13029) collar, with bands, and displaying elegant be-ringed hands, preaches from a pulpit, the upper part only of which is depicted. In his eye is stuck a monocle with short handle and cord. The British lion has lost a foot labelled 'Minorca' and the French cock is tearing up the Union flag; two Frenchman discuss their aim to acquire British colonies in North America as well. The Lord Mayor of London and aldermen deliver a petition for an inquiry into the loss of Minorca and are met with evasive responses from courtiers or ministers; Hanoverian mercenaries are confronted by three countrymen who complain at the absence of a local militia which they blame on landowners' fear for their game ('hares & partridges'). Abstract:
"Satire on the jockeying for position of the European powers in early 1740. A race-course on the sea-shore with a variety of animals and riders representing different countries: first comes Cardinal Fleury (France) falling from his fox which has stumbled at the winning post on "[Baron] Sinclair's papers". Behind the fox stands the devil holding a sheet of paper with a picture of five ships, lettered "Baltic Sea", an allusion to the French failure to form an alliance in that region. The devil pulls down one of the scales hanging from the umpire stand; the heavier scale represents the Imperial allies with swords, coins, a picture of the Imperial eagle and a note reading "ballance of power", while the lighter one holds objects connected with France and Spain, a cardinal's hat, mask, fox, and notes of "50,000 livers" and "10,000 pistoles" as well as a paper lettered "Mediation". On the umpire stand, America is in conversation with Africa while Europe embraces Asia for the sake of "Protection [of]Trade". Further to the left stands Captain Jenkins holding out his severed ear. Behind Fleury's fox runs the Spanish wolf, its rider unseated by the British lion's lashing tail, lettered "No Search Free Trade". The Russian bear, ridden by a man with a scimitar, follows; the bear kicks its hind legs at the Turkish elephant that is draped with a cloth lettered "Belgrade" in reference to the recent ceding of that city to Turkey. The sultan stands behind the elephant, offering a bag of money to a Frenchman wearing a bag-wig; a monkey also wearing a bag-wig, representing France, crouches in front of the bear. A Dutchman, smoking a pipe, stands beside a distance post having abandoned the race; his boar is laden with trade goods. Behind, on the left, the devil and a fool lead a group of Roman Catholic bishops, roped together, towards a closed building labelled "Conclave" where they will elect a successor to Pope Clement XII. In front of them seven men representing the European powers are seated at a round table with papers lettered "Alliance" and "Sinclair"; Cardinal Fleury turns aside towards another devil asking, "Extricute me now & I'm yours for ever". Further forward, a British herald, supported by classical female soldiers, blows a trumpet; beside them Fleury raises the front of his robe attempting to catch billowing smoke, lettered "Universal Monarchy". In the foreground, Time sits on his hour-glass holding a paper with a picture of a wolf dressed as a cardinal; rats chew at the bottom of the sheet; Fortune looses her grasp of Theodore of Corsica who throws his orb after his crown as it flies off on outspread wings; a British bulldog savages a Spanish wolf while a French fox runs off behind a bush; Captain Coram shows the plan of the Foundling Hospital to a woman and child seated on the ground; a Catholic ecclesiastic wrings his hands saying, "Ye have taking away my Gods, what have I more"; a man bends down to lift a chest full of "10000 pieces of Eight"; Emperor Charles VI rides on an eagle towards the finishing post, holding a shield with the British coat of arms in front of him while a shield with the fleur-de-lis falls to the ground; he is preceded by Charles Albert of Bavaria, fully armed on horseback, and carrying a shield with the motto, "Never conquered"; in front of him, a French ambassador kneels pleading with the British lion who tramples on a shield with the fleur-de-lis and prepares to fire a cannon. At lower right, Britannia pushes aside France (a woman in classical dress with a helmet, and a cock at her side holding out a paper lettered "Mediation") and points to a map showing the island of Cuba offered by a British herald and a sailor. In the background, to left, is the bay of Cadiz in which the Spanish fleet is shut up, British ships sail freely on the sea; a nymph holding a pennant lettered, "Quatuor Maria Vindico" (I claim the four seas), rides a dolphin; beyond are the island of Cuba and distant mountains. "A Frenchman, in profile to the left, seated on a globe. To the globe are fixed vertical rods, the upper ends of which terminate in four smaller globes which are thus supported above the principal one; chains link these four globes to a fifth globe above, and slightly longer than, the other four. On this fifth globe is a child from whose bare posteriors six balls are being projected. On two (right) of the four globes are the heads of an ass, and of a man wearing a fool's cap; to their jaws are attached reins which are held by the Frenchman whose right hand is extended in the attitude of an orator. On the third globe is a monkey's head, which more resembles that of a sheep; the fourth globe is blank. The intention of the satire is explained by the inscription beneath the title, 'A F------t ------An Ass------ A Fool------A Monkey------A Nothing'. On the large globe on which the aeronaut sits is a cannon, its muzzle projecting upwards and to the left beyond the contour of the globe. In the centre is the winged head of a bald and bearded man in profile to the left. "Two-part satire on the resignation of Lord Bute, April 1763. On the left is a scene of execution, headed "Excise", with Bute, identified by his plaid waistcoat, hanging from an apple tree (referring to the Cider Bill), a devil sitting on the branch above him wears a large boot (a pun on Bute) on one leg, the other ending in a claw; two men below exult. In the centre a man (evidently another representation of Bute as he wears a large boot on one leg and on the other leg wears a garter lettered "Honi ..." as in the scene on the right) lies across a fire while another pumps a pair of bellows to fan the flames; three farmers standing behind the fire and another to the right rejoice at Bute's downfall. On the right, another devil reciting the proverb, "Harm watch, Harm catch", one leg ending in a hammer, sits on top of a gallows from which hangs a fox (Henry Fox) wighted down by money bags tied around his neck. On the right is a scene set in a grand interior, headed "Resignation, in which Princess Augusta sprawls weeping in a chair her breasts partly exposed while a devil delves into Bute's breeches as he drags him through a door through which flames and smoke can be seen, the Duke of Cumberland brandishes a sword in his right hand and pushes Bute with his left; he is encouraged by a nephew, Edward, Duke of York, at lower right, a lusty goat, one of whose hands is a claw, looks on with pleasure."--British Museum online catalogue

"Perceval, in back view, and in barrister's wig and gown, holds a magic lantern by which he displays the Pope in the guise of a ragged beggar, for the benefit of John Bull and the King. George III is seated on the throne and looks at the screen through a telescope held by Eldon, inscribed 'Ill-done's Patent Magnifying Papascope'. The King, much alarmed at what he sees, clutches the mace which Eldon holds, with the Purse of the Great Seal attached to it. Beside the King (right) stand a bishop in back view, and a man wearing academic cap and gown. Perceval' s lantern is inscribed 'Percev[al] Humbu[g]'. Canning stands in front of it; Castlereagh beside it, both pointing at John Bull, a yokel in a smock, who has fallen to the ground in terror at the lantern-display, guineas falling from his pocket. The figure on the screen is an old man with patched robes, two keys hanging from a girdle, a sack of 'Bulls' on his back. In place of his triple crown he wears three hats like a Jewish old clothes' man, and for a crosier he has a branching stick. Close to the screen and with his back to it, Portland sits on a block of stone (cf. British Museum Satires No. 10718), talking to Hawkesbury. On the stone is drawn a wig on a block with the inscription 'Retrospective View of Portland' [i.e. as a former Whig]. In the shadow, between and behind Canning and Castlereagh, stands Melville in Highland dress; on his sporran: 'Ex Privy' [Counsellor]. Three other figures are not characterized. In the foreground a dog, its collar inscribed 'John Bull', is biting the 'Union Bill 1800', where it is headed by an Irish harp; a fragment, with the Royal Arms, has been torn off. The dog befouls a 'Catholic Petition'. On the wall is a large playbill: 'Theatre Royal St Stephens By his Majesty's Servants Feby 1807 Horrid Tragedy of Raw Head and Bloody Bones in a Red Cloak Mesrs Percivall, Canning, H-b-y [Harrowby], Portland Castlereagh Wonderful Deceptions, Messrs Proteus & Ill-done.'"--British Museum online catalogue
